This National Public Works Week, we’re celebrating some of the dedicated team members who help keep Garner running every day — often behind the scenes and around the clock.
Meet Wally, Derek, Stoney, Jon, and Jim from the Town of Garner, NC Government Public Works team:
🏙️ Wally has been part of the Facilities team for just over three years, helping maintain Town buildings and parks. His favorite part of the job is “all the nice people I get to work with,” and he recommends visiting Garner’s parks and downtown events. He specifically mentioned that the Public Works team enjoys working to make the town's July 3rd event special for the community.
🌳 Derek, Public Works Superintendent, has spent 15 years helping maintain Garner’s parks and grounds. He shared that his favorite part of the job is taking something “from scratch” and turning it into something beautiful for residents to enjoy. He wants the community to know that "the Public Works team shows up every day, and we try to make things look as beautiful as we can."
🔧 Stoney, a member of the Facilities team for the past year and a half, described Public Works in one word: “unpredictable” - a perfect reflection of the variety of work the crews handle each day. He enjoys working with people across the community and recommends spending time outdoors at Garner’s parks and fishing at Lake Benson.
🚛 Jon is one of the newest team members in Public Works and he works in Streets & Right-of-Way Maintenance. He said one of the most important things he wants the community to recognize is “the unseen work that goes on daily.” Jon enjoys being outdoors, working alongside his team, and recommends visiting Lake Benson Park.
👷 Jim, with the Right-of-Way Division, described Public Works as “family” and reminded residents that crews are on call 24/7 to respond when needed. He enjoys working on special projects around town using his favorite piece of equipment which is the knuckle boom.
Together, these employees help maintain our streets, parks, downtown spaces, facilities, and public areas to keep Garner safe, beautiful, and welcoming for everyone.
