Cate Freeman

Congratulations on being our October Featured Member!

The famous flying team, the Blue Angels, have a phrase where every pilot, during debriefings, would end their comments with “Glad To Be Here”. This translates well with Cate, whether at work, on a conference call, or at one of our quarterly meetings she is there with a smile and ready to help.

When she is not working at Carolina Beach Fire Department, you'll find her strolling down the beach before the rest of the world is out of bed. While others are looking for seashells, she's on a serious mission to collect shark teeth. Some people call it a hobby; others suspect she's quietly building an army of sharks.

As she gazes out over the ocean, Cate often daydreams about her future European adventure. In her mind, she's already wandering the streets of Paris, tossing coins into fountains in Rome, and trying to figure out how to fit six months' worth of souvenirs into one suitcase.

After solving all of life's problems during her beach walk, she makes an essential stop for a vanilla latte. This isn't just coffee—it's fuel for greatness. Or at least fuel for making it through the rest of the morning.

Then it's back home, where she settles into her command center—the couch—to catch up on Desperate Housewives. While some people watch the news to stay informed, she prefers to stay current on neighborhood drama, suspicious behavior, and the occasional spectacular life decision made by someone else.

So, if you see a woman carrying shark teeth, dreaming of Europe, sipping a vanilla latte, and quoting Desperate Housewives, you've probably found Cate—living her best life one beach walk and one episode at a time.

🌟 Member Spotlight – September 🌟

Congratulations Tricia Rogers on being our Featured Member!

Originally from Apex, Trish now supports Holly Springs Fire Department as an Administrative Assistant. With 16 years of experience, she is an integral part of the team at Holly Springs.

But if you're ever looking for her on a Saturday, there's a good chance you'll find Trish wandering through an antique store, convinced that she absolutely needs a rusty milk can, an old clock that doesn't work, or a piece of furniture older than she is. Antique shopping is a favorite pastime, and she considers it a competitive sport.

When it is time to refuel from all that treasure hunting, you'll find her at Cracker Barrel. Some people have a favorite restaurant; she practically has a reserved parking spot.

Also, a huge fan of Steel Magnolias. She can be heard quoting parts of the movie, laughing, crying, and then immediately watching it again. Tricia’s music of choice is Stevie Nicks, because every day is a little better with a soundtrack that makes you feel like you're walking through life in slow motion with dramatic wind blowing through your hair.

Now, here's where things get interesting: believe it or not, she is afraid of heights. Not mildly uncomfortable—actually afraid of heights. So naturally, she decided the best thing to do was jump out of an airplane. That's right, she has been skydiving. Apparently, her decision-making process occasionally takes a vacation. The good news is she survived, and now has a great story that begins with, "You won't believe this, but..."

So, if you hear Stevie Nicks playing while someone carries an antique lamp into Cracker Barrel and tells stories about voluntarily falling from the sky despite being terrified of heights, there's a good chance you've found her. Glad she is part of our TEAM!

For the past 15 years local musician Tom Farr has played “Taps” each September 11th in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the 911 attack. This Friday 9/11 he will join firefighters at Liberty Fire Department for this observance. The public is invited to join us. Taps will be played at the following times:

8:46 am-American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower
9:03 am-United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower
9:37am-American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon
9:59am-The South Tower collapsed
10:03am-United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania
10:28am-The North Tower collapsed

Traditions like Taps connect us to our history and remind us that service is more than a job—it is a calling.

As part of our quarterly training during the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo, Liberty Fire Chief Matt Talbott and East Side Captain Angela Talbott delivered a hands-on session on effective radio communications.

Following an overview of radio operations and best practices, participants were divided into teams and assigned response scenarios throughout the Expo floor. Teams practiced proper radio procedures by acknowledging dispatch, reporting en route, arriving on scene, and marking assignments complete.

Strong communication is a critical component of emergency response, and this practical exercise helped reinforce the skills needed to ensure clear, accurate, and professional radio traffic during real-world incidents
