Garner Historical Society celebrates 100 years of Black History month! Thanks to our Board Member Joyce Bailey Stephens, we have a special exhibit in the museum that recognizes the black owned businesses located in our historic downtown. While you are there, stop by the Meadowbook Country Club exhibit. Meadowbrook was founded in 1958 as one of the first Black country clubs in the southeast and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places! Beginning Saturday (2-14), we will have a Black History Quiz Bowl game. This quiz has 11 categories - each player will choose four ...... of course prizes are involved. Come by and test your knowledge of black history - one category has questions specific to Garner. More information on the game by Thursday!!

Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King’s message of justice, equality, and service continues to shape our nation and our community. As we reflect on his work, we’re reminded that history is not just something we study, it’s something we live and carry forward through our actions.

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we encourage everyone to take time to learn, reflect, and serve in ways that strengthen our shared commitment to dignity, unity, and hope.

📚 “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Back in the late 1980’s and 1990’s there was community movement to bring life back to Downtown Garner. The Historic Depot was restored, the Caboose was donated and a major restoration to the beautiful historic Bryan Building. Annual festivals were held during that “era” which would include art, music, vendors, barbecue cook offs and lots of people. A folk artist by the name of Clyde Jones joined some of those events and made his famous eccentric “critters” with his chain saw. The critters he left behind have been stored in the historic Caboose for the last 30 years!! He was internationally known as “the Picasso of driftwood.” Throughout his decades of creating, Jones would see his work on the roof of Crook’s Corner restaurant in Chapel Hill, the Bynum General Store, the Smithsonian, the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore and the Great Wall of China and now the Garner History Museum at the Depot. Sadly, Clyde Jones passed away on Christmas Day. The Museum has a display featuring three of his famous critters created at an early Downtown Garner festival. Come by on Wednesday and Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 and appreciate the whimsical works of this talented artist.

If you have stories or photos of the early downtown festivals we would love it if you will share!
