Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms of the Anderson County Rural Fire Department!

Today we want to recognize the women who answer the call, serve their community, and still carry the title of “Mom” every single day. Volunteer fire departments are often thought of as being made up mostly of men — but that’s far from the truth. Our department is proud to have strong, dedicated mothers serving as firefighters, EMTs and support staff.

These women balance family, work, and emergency response with courage and compassion. Whether they’re responding to a fire in the middle of the night, helping neighbors during emergencies, or supporting the department behind the scenes, they are an essential part of our fire family.

To all the moms who serve and support the Anderson County Rural Fire Department — thank you for your sacrifice, strength, and heart. Your community is better because of you.

This also includes our wives that keep the children while us men run out of the house for a call at any time of the day or night !

Happy Mother’s Day! 🚒❤️

Personally I want to thank each of these women as well!!!! C Gillespie

Just a couple of announcements this morning, along with your weather forecast:

1️⃣ Power Restoration Efforts
City crews are continuing to work in the areas of Oak and Walnut and 1st through 3rd Street to restore power following yesterday’s accident. Please use caution when driving through these areas and be mindful of workers on scene.

We also ask for your patience with any service interruptions. Crews have been working tirelessly, including overnight, to restore services as quickly and safely as possible. With at least six utility poles damaged, repairs take time. The City of Garnett and their crews are doing a fantastic job, and we appreciate their dedication.

2️⃣ Power Outage Questions / 911 Reminder
Please be aware that dispatch does not control power restoration efforts and typically does not have estimated restoration times (ETAs). We kindly ask that you do not tie up 911 or administrative phone lines with questions regarding power outages.

We have full confidence that the City of Garnett will provide updates regarding restoration efforts as information becomes available.

3️⃣ Firefighter Training Exercise
There will be a firefighter extrication training taking place today at Andy’s Towing on the east side of town. If you notice an abundance of fire trucks and emergency vehicles in the area, please do not be alarmed — this is only training.

Community Reminders
Today is the Annual Square Fair downtown, and tomorrow we celebrate Mother’s Day and Graduation.

Please take time to enjoy family and friends, but most importantly, do so safely.

We would like to wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day, and to all graduates, congratulations on your accomplishments!

An upper level disturbance along with a surface cold front will bring a chance for showers and thunderstorms late this afternoon and Tonight. A few of the storms across north central KS late this afternoon and early this evening may produce small hail and gusty winds. The showers should end Sunday morning. Skies will become mostly Sunny Sunday afternoon. Highs will only reach the upper 60s to lower 70s. Expect a warming trend through the remainder of next week.

05/08/2026

Please do not call dispatch as they are actively working an accident in the area. City crews are aware of the issue and working to help resolve the issue. Dispatch does not have an ETA on the power outage.

We are thankful that our brothers and sisters, along with our neighboring county, are safe following the multi-vehicle accident this morning.

Please, everyone — pay attention while driving. When you see red and blue lights, slow down and move over. Emergency responders, many of them volunteer firefighters, are out there risking their lives to protect and help others. They deserve to make it home safely too.

Distracted driving and failing to move over puts responders and victims in even greater danger while they are working on scene. A few extra seconds of caution can save a life.

Great job to all of the responders and agencies involved today. Coffey County and our neighboring crews did an outstanding job working together.
