Last week we teamed up with Anderson County KS Explorer Post #8008 to teach them about vehicle extrication techniques. Explorers were able to go hands on and operate tools that we use out in the field.

Thursday evening's celebration was truly memorable. We were honored by the generosity of Mike Norman, who donated a bell in recognition of his 36 years of service on the fire department. Some retired GFD firefighters were able to join us for the occasion.
Bells hold deep historical and ceremonial significance for firefighters. Traditionally, before radios and pagers, bells were used to summon crews to the station, signal the start of a shift, and warn pedestrians that apparatus was approaching. Today, they remain a powerful symbol of honor, duty, and remembrance.

We had the great honor of flying the flag for a funeral procession Friday. Mr. Gene Vincent was a resident of the Colony area for 60 years and served in the United States Army from 1958-1962. He also served as a volunteer for the Colony Volunteer Fire & Rescue. Thank you for your service. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²

After serving as a fundraising effort, the Garnett Fire Department has found it necessary to phase out lending our roasters, tables, and chairs. Although this wasn't an easy decision we feel it is best. These items were bought by the fire department with fundraising money and used for our open house and chili and soup supper. The cost to replace these items has surpassed the donations we receive for loaning them out. We have multiple damaged pieces that we have to replace so we can have our events. We also are not staffed which can make it difficult to arrange delivery and drop-offs. Thank you for understanding.

Today, while so many other things were happening, many GFD firefighters were spending the day with other firefighters from throughout Anderson County training on vehicle extrication. Thank you to Anderson County Kansas Fire and Emergency Management for helping to get this class here, Tactical Advantage Training LLC for providing quality training, Weis Fire & Safety Equipment, LLC for enough tools for everyone to work, and Andy's Wrecker & Repair for hosting us and arranging for plenty of vehicles to train on.

**Burn ban lifted**
Good afternoon. We just wanted to stop in and give an update for today Wednesday March 24th. Originally we planned on not allowing burning within the city limits of Garnett due to projected high winds. After an updated weather outlook we have decided to allow burning for the rest of the day in the city. The next few days have projected wind gusts of 30 mph and will ultimately result in a burn ban. Weather conditions are closely monitored and burn bans could change with an updated weather forecast. Burn bans are put into place for your safety and the safety of others. With close proximity of homes and structures within the city limits we make decisions that we feel best aligns with everyone's safety and the safety of their property.

If you plan to burn please make sure all fires are thoroughly extinguished before the 30mph wind gust the next few days.

Before you burn make sure to call Anderson County Communications at 785-448-6823 option 4.

Burn permits must be obtained before any burning occurs. An adequate water source shall be on hand for extinguishing the fire. Fires shall be monitored at all times before being thoroughly extinguished. Thank you for doing your part.

From the US National Weather Service Topeka Kansas.
Conditions will continue to be warm, even hot in some cases, through the next few days. Along with breezy winds and dry air, fire weather conditions will be very high to extreme this weekend. Any planned burns should be postponed and any recent burns should be checked to ensure they are completely extinguished.
