The Village of Garrettsville is hosting a Community Shred Event on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The event will be held at Village Hall, 8213 High Street, Garrettsville, OH 44231, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

On July 12, 2026 at 5:21 pm, there was a report of a possible drowning the Nelson Ledges Quarry Park. Local emergency responders from Community EMS District, Garrettsville Freedom Nelson Joint Fire District, Portage County Sheriff's Office - Ohioresponded to the scene, along with a request to activate the Portage County Water Rescue Team (PCWRT). This request summons personnel and assets from Mantua Shalersville Fire Department, Aurora Fire Department, Charleston Fire Department, Kent Fire Department, Palmyra Fire Department, Deerfield Fire Department, Brimfield Fire Department, Suffield Fire Department, Braceville Fire Department, Milton Fire Department and Stow Police Department.

At arrival, lifeguards from the Nelson Ledges Quarry Park were actively searching the water for the reported victim. Public address announcements were broadcasted at the Quarry Park throughout the operation, asking for anyone to come forward if they had more information on the reported individual in the water.

Water rescue team operations included the deployment of multiple rescue divers searching the water, a boat equipment with sonar, a member using an AquaEye and a drone. At approximately 1930, operations concluded with no victim discovered.

A special thank you goes out to everyone who assisted in this mission. The hospitality from the vendors at the Quarry Park who made sure the responders were cared for is greatly appreciated.

A report of a drowning victim was received at 5:45 PM at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park. Local emergency responders from Community EMS District, Garrettsville Freedom Nelson Joint Fire District, Hiram Fire Department, Portage County Sheriff's Office - Ohio, and Village of Garrettsville Police Department responded to the scene, along with a request to activate the Portage County Water Rescue Team (PCWRT). A report of a drowning victim was received at 5:45PM in Nelson Township. Emergency responders from across Portage, Trumbull and Mahoning Counties have responded to the scene. At this time, there is no additional information to share. Updates will be provided as the incident occurs.
