Engine 5 arrived on scene and simultaneously stretched two hand lines one to the interior of the first floor as well as the second floor. Truck 1 followed shortly after. Crews battled the fire along with mutual aid companies for approximately 2 hours before the fire was placed under control. This incident rose to 3 alarms before being placed under control. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Union County Fire Investigation Task Force. Thank you to all of our mutual aid partners for your help.

Garwood Fire is monitoring the incoming storm system. We urge all residents to stay off the roads and stay inside. Only travel if it is an emergency. Please keep all home exhaust vents clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide buildup inside your home. If you use a generator in the event of a power outage DO NOT run it inside. We recommend you run your generator at least 20 feet from away from your home. Keep interior windows and doors closed while running a generator nearby. Help us help you by keeping fire hydrants clear of snow. Seconds matter in an emergency. As always call 9-1-1 for any emergencies that may arise. Do not hesitate to call if you are in need of help.

Yesterday around 5 p.m., Engine 3 was requested into Roselle on a cover assignment while they operated at a structure fire. Shortly after going en route, Engine 3 was redirected to the scene on the third alarm. Upon their arrival on scene, the crew laid in from a hydrant and stretched handlines into the rear yard of one of the exposure buildings. The crew was tasked with fire suppression and exposure protection.

The crew operated for approximately 1.5 hours before being relieved. After being relieved, Engine 3’s crew spotted a cat in a second-floor window of one of the fire buildings. Engine 3’s crew, along with members from Hillside and Roselle FD, rescued the cat from the window and reunited it with its owner.

Throughout the incident, Engine 3 supplied three handlines, a ladder pipe, as well as another engine company with water. Superb work from all departments involved. Garwood FD’s prayers are with the affected families.

This past weekend Capt. Gesior, FF/EMT Trojan, and FF Cugno attended Structural Collapse Operations taught by Safety and Survival Training at Central Jersey Compliance’s Rescue Weekend. Members trained in emergency structural shoring, heavy lifting and moving, as well as numerous cutting stations using battery powered tools and torches. The three members finished off the weekend by participating in a training scenario focusing on freeing simulated victims from a collapse area. Congratulations to these members on completing the course and expanding the capabilities of the Garwood Fire Department.

Last month and this month members completed and were certified in Swift Water Rescue Operations and Swift Water Rescue Technician. These classes consist of several water rescue techniques ranging from walk outs, to boat ops, and aggressive swimming maneuvers to perform rescues. The members worked hard having to pass written tests and swim tests to be able to obtain the certification. Garwood Fire Department now has 8 members certified to Swift Water Operations level and 6 members certified to Swift Water Technician level. We would like to thank the Borough for allowing us to obtain these certifications and for delivering the training to us.
