This truly means more than words can express. 💙 During a time when so many in our community were hurting, uncertain, and simply trying to make it through each day, this support was a reminder that Gary was not forgotten.
Thank you to the Looking Out Foundation and everyone whose donations made this generous gift possible. Your support allows Sojourner Truth House to continue showing up for our community, not only during a crisis, but long after the lights come back on.
The storm may have passed and the power has been restored, but recovery does not happen overnight. We are incredibly grateful for those who continue to see the need, stand with Gary, and help us continue our mission of serving those who need us most.
From all of us at Sojourner Truth House, thank you for looking out for Gary and believing in the work we do. ❤️
On August 11th, Northwest Indiana was struck by a major storm. Gary, Indiana, a majority-Black city was left without power for over 2 weeks. With power finally restored this past Tuesday, the community is still in urgent need of recovery and support. This blackout resulted in numerous fatalities, closed schools, and brought a whole community to a standstill without any real assistance. So, local organizations like Sojourner Truth House stepped up to take care of their own.
Sojourner Truth House is a Black-led organization that operates not only as one of the largest food pantries in the county, but also as a day center for women and families facing housing insecurity. They offer social and emotional support, transportation to appointments, laundry services, health clinics, and more. This well rounded support continues until clients are back on their feet and in permanent homes, building resilience that helps all of Gary to become stronger.
Looking Out Foundation was honored to grant $10,000 in urgent response funds to this incredible organization. Your donations made that support possible. When you give to LOF, you are helping us to be proactive and able to respond in real time to where the greatest need arises- Thank you!
The lights are back on in Gary, but we will not look away and are asking you all to continue to give this community your attention and support.
