Today, Derrick Pouncey was sentenced to 176 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections for multiple felony charges related to the April 10, 2024 double homicide of Klorya and Kyle Matthews and the attempted murder of another individual.

Pouncey was convicted of:

• Murder (2 Counts)
• Attempted Murder
• Aggravated Battery
• Domestic Battery
• Battery
• Firearm Enhancement (3 Counts)

The Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force investigated the case.

Today at the 2026 District 1 Law Enforcement Council awards banquet we had Sgt. Michael Mitchell and Officer Daniel Paulson awarded for Exemplary Service. Sgt. David Umbarger received the President Award and Retired Cpl. McKinley was awarded a Lifetime Achievement. Congrats to our award winners.

The Gary Police Department extends our thoughts and prayers to LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jon Samuelson, who remains in critical condition after being wounded this morning in the line of duty in Michigan City.

We are keeping Deputy Samuelson, his loved ones, and his entire law enforcement family in our hearts during this difficult time. We remain hopeful and prayerful for his full recovery.
