IMPORTANT EVENT UPDATE — EVENT CANCELLED

In light of the significant storm damage our community has experienced, the difficult decision has been made to **cancel the Stop the Violence Car & Bike Show scheduled for Saturday, August 15.

Right now, our focus must be where it belongs — on our community, our neighbors, and everyone's safety.

We know many families, businesses, and neighborhoods have been impacted by these storms. To everyone dealing with damage, power outages, cleanup, or simply the uncertainty that comes with an event like this, please know that we are with you.

Our city officials, public safety personnel, public works crews, utility workers, and many others are working around the clock to address storm damage, keep our residents safe, and help return our city to normal as quickly and safely as possible.

This event was created to bring our community together — and although we won't be gathering at the stadium this weekend, that spirit of community is more important now than ever.

Please continue to look out for one another, check on your neighbors, give crews room to work, and keep everyone affected by these storms in your thoughts.

Gary is a strong community, and we will get through this together. ❤️

Along with City Hall being closed, the Public Safety Facility is closed at this time. Please call 911 for emergencies, 219-660-0000 for non emergencies, and utilize online reporting if applicable.

Due to ongoing storm recovery efforts, City Hall is closed to the public until power is restored and the building is fully operational.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through widespread damage throughout Gary and prioritize the safety and recovery of our community.

Today, we remember Lieutenant George Yaros of the Gary Police Department, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on August 11, 1981.

Lieutenant Yaros was killed while responding to a bank robbery, giving his life in service to the citizens of Gary.

His courage, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Today, we honor his service and remember the life he gave protecting others.

We will always remember him, and we will always remember his sacrifice.

Today, the Gary Police Department remembers Patrolman Walter Poturalski, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Patrolman Poturalski was killed when the motorcycle he was riding struck a stone and crashed in front of a funeral cortege, just one-half mile from the cemetery.

He proudly served with the Gary Police Department for eight years, dedicating himself to protecting and serving the citizens of Gary.

He was survived by his wife, daughter, and two sons.

Today, we honor Patrolman Walter Poturalski, remember his service, and reflect on the sacrifice he made in the line of duty.

His sacrifice will never be forgotten. His memory lives on.
