Remembering Chief Chauvin

Today, we honor and remember District Chief Spencer Chauvin, who tragically lost his life on this day in 2016 while working a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 10 in LaPlace.

Chief Chauvin was a selfless public servant who dedicated his life to protecting our community with honor, courage, and integrity. We will forever be grateful for his service and sacrifice.

FIRE CHIEF FOR THE DAY
Chief Jax Shirer stepped into the boots of Fire Chief for the day, getting an inside look at the responsibilities and action behind the scenes.

His day began with a ride aboard Engine 513 en route to Station 51 (Hemlock Fire Station), where he toured the station and explored some of the firefighting equipment. Captain Burke gave him a drone demonstration, followed by hands-on participation in the daily inspection of Ladder 517. Chief Shirer even got the chance to test his skills with hose handling.

Next up was a stop at the department’s maintenance warehouse, where he was fitted for his bunker gear and got a behind-the-scenes look at how the fleet is maintained and kept ready for action.

After grabbing lunch at Chick-fil-A, Chief Shirer headed to Station 54 (Woodland LaPlace Fire Station) to take part in department training activities. There, he took on the department's Physical Ability Assessment, powering through the stair stepper, Keiser Sled, and Forceable Entry Door. He wrapped up the training session with a fire extinguisher demonstration at the training grounds.

The day concluded at the Emergency Operations Center and 911 Communications Center, where Commander Chauvin gave Chief Shirer a tour of the dispatch center and explained how emergency calls are managed and coordinated.

Before signing off, Chief Shirer thanked the firefighters for their dedication and for giving him a glimpse into their world. It was a memorable day for everyone involved, and we hope Chief Shirer enjoyed the experience as much as we enjoyed having him with us!

FIRE CHIEF FOR THE DAY

Yesterday, Chief Greyson Delaneuville proudly stepped into the role of Fire Chief for the day. 👨‍🚒🚒

He kicked off his morning with a meeting in his office alongside staff members before heading to the apparatus bay at Station 71 (Historic West Garyville Fire Station) to connect with the crew as they conducted an inspection of Engine 723. Chief Delaneuville rolled up his sleeves and got hands-on—conducting a radio check, operating the fire pump, and inspecting the extrication equipment.

From there, he made a stop at the maintenance warehouse to get fitted for his bunker gear and test out a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to ensure everything was response-ready.

After a well-earned lunch break at Chick-Fil-A, Chief Delaneuville visited Station 51 (Hemlock LaPlace Fire Station) to examine Ladder 517. He even took a ride in the basket to confirm the truck's operational readiness. Following a tour of the station and a behind-the-scenes look at how firefighters live during their shifts, he was introduced to the department’s drone technology and its use in search and rescue missions.

The final stop of his day was at the Emergency Operations Center and 911 Communications Center, where he learned how emergencies are managed and how 911 calls are received and dispatched in real time.

Chief Delaneuville ended his day by thanking the firefighters for their dedication and for taking the time to share their world with him. We hope Chief Delaneuville enjoyed the experience as much as we enjoyed having him!
