๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŽ‰Happy Birthday Firefighter Ahmaad Harrison!๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿš’

Today we want to wish Firefighter Ahmaad Harrison a very happy birthday!

This year marks 7 years of service for Ahmaad at the 12 House. His story with us started even earlier, as one of the first campers in our Kids Fire Camp 10 years ago. Since then, he has grown into a firefighter, EMT, mentor, and camp team leader who continues to give back to the same program that helped introduce him to the fire service.

Ahmaad was named our 2022 Firefighter of the Year and is a credentialed North Carolina EMT. Around the station, he is also known as our โ€œIT guy,โ€ handling a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps things moving, including networking, design, technology support, and digital projects.

Outside of the department, Ahmaad started and owns Chaos Digital, where he has developed several software and AI platforms. His newest project, HumVision, is a modern sonar viewing app built for field use, designed to help view down imaging and side-scan sonar data more effectively.

From camper to firefighter and innovator, Ahmaadโ€™s future is bright, and we are proud to have him as part of our team.

Please join us in wishing Firefighter Ahmaad Harrison a happy birthday!

Today we want to wish a very happy birthday to Cadet Darrien McGee!

Darrien has been a member of The 12 House for almost two years, but his roots with us go back even further after spending several years as a camper at our Kids Fire Camp. Since joining as a cadet, he has stayed active in training and continues to grow in the fire and rescue service.

Last year, Darrien and his brother Darren earned first place in the NCAREMS Junior Technical Rescue Competition, representing our department well.

Darrien also proudly serves alongside his father, Lieutenant Darrick McGee, making the fire service a true family commitment.

Join us in wishing Cadet Darrien McGee a very happy birthday!

Drone Footage: Roanoke Rapids Lake Water Rescue

This drone footage shows the conditions crews faced Thursday night during a water rescue on Roanoke Rapids Lake near the dam. Crews worked through darkness, wind, waves, and distance from shore to locate and rescue a male in the water.
Our water rescue team deployed and located the male, who was holding onto a life vest. He was brought aboard our watercraft, taken to the 5th Street boat landing, and turned over to Halifax County EMS for treatment and transport.

Following the rescue, crews were advised that a second male from a kayak was still missing. Search operations have continued by land, water, and air with multiple agencies working together.

Out of respect for those involved, the victimโ€™s face has been blurred.

Please keep the survivor, the missing maleโ€™s family, and all responders involved in your thoughts.

Water Rescue & Search Operations
Update 05/16/2026 17:00

Thursday night, Gaston Fire & Rescue responded to Roanoke Rapids Lake at the request of Roanoke Rapids Police Department and Roanoke Rapids Fire Department for a male in the water near the dam yelling for help.

RRPD and RRFD located the male approximately 60 yards from shore as he was drifting toward the dam. Strong winds and waves made conditions difficult. Our water rescue team was deployed and quickly located the male, who was being directed by lights and drone operations. He was found holding onto a life vest, brought aboard our watercraft, and transported to the 5th Street Boat Landing, where Halifax County EMS provided care and transported him to a local emergency department.

During the transfer, the male advised that he had been in a kayak with another male, who had given him his life jacket, and that he was unsure of the second maleโ€™s location. Land, water, and air search operations began and continued for several hours; however, the second male was not located that night.

Search operations continued yesterday and today. Efforts have included drone operations, land searches, hull-mounted side scan sonar, towable sonar, underwater ROV operations, cadaver K9 resources, helicopter support, and public safety diving.

Agencies assisting throughout the operation to date have included:

๐Ÿšจ OPEN BURNING BAN LIFTED ๐Ÿšจ

Effective Sunday, May 3, 2026 at 8:00 A.M., the statewide open burning ban has been lifted for most counties, including here in Northampton County. Burning is now permitted with a valid burn permit where required.

Even though the ban has been lifted, conditions can still change quickly. Help us keep our community safe by following these important safety tips:

๐Ÿ”ฅ Never leave a fire unattended
๐Ÿ”ฅ Keep a water source (hose, buckets, extinguisher) nearby
๐Ÿ”ฅ Clear the area around your burn pile of leaves and debris
๐Ÿ”ฅ Avoid burning on windy or dry days
๐Ÿ”ฅ Keep fires small and manageable
๐Ÿ”ฅ Fully extinguish your fire before leaving
๐Ÿ”ฅ Check local regulations and obtain any required permits

๐Ÿš’ Our crews are always ready, but preventing fires is the best protection. Letโ€™s work together to keep Northampton County safe.

If you see an uncontrolled fire or emergency, call 911 immediately!
