Gate City Police Department Responds to Welfare Check; Arrest Made
Gate City, VA — On April 5, 2026, an officer with the Gate City Police Department responded to a welfare check after a concerned individual reported receiving a text message from a female resident that stated, "help."
Officer John Coalson arrived at the apartment and heard a disturbance coming from inside the residence. He made contact with a male subject, who was detained and secured in the rear of a patrol vehicle.
Officer Coalson then entered the apartment to check on the female occupant and observed injuries consistent with an assault. While inside the residence, he also observed, in plain view on the kitchen table, multiple baggies containing white and brown powder substances believed to be illegal narcotics.
The residence was secured while a search warrant was obtained.
The male subject was identified as Anthony Carrier of Sullivan County, Tennessee. Carrier was taken into custody and charged with the following offenses:
Virginia Code § 18.2-250 — Possession of Schedule I & II Controlled Substances
Virginia Code § 18.2-51 — Malicious Wounding
Virginia Code § 18.2-57.2 — Domestic Assault
Carrier was also charged under Virginia Code § 19.2-100 with a warrant of extradition. He is wanted in the state of Tennessee for a felony probation violation.
Additional charges may be filed pending the results of laboratory analysis.
"This incident highlights the importance of taking welfare checks seriously and responding swiftly to calls for help," said Chief Terry Sivert of the Gate City Police Department. "Officer Coalson’s actions ensured the safety of the victim and removed a violent offender from the community. We remain committed to protecting our citizens and holding offenders accountable."
The Gate City Police Department would like to thank Officer Kevin McKinney of the Gate City Police Department and Deputy James Manis of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during this incident.
