The Joe F. Gurney Facility administration, staff, family and friends recently held a retirement celebration honoring Senior Warden Nicole Sandifer for her dedication, loyalty, and 31 years of distinguished service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Guests gathered to share heartfelt stories and personal testimonies, reflecting on the profound impact Warden Sandifer has had throughout her career.

Distinguished guests included the TDCJ Executive Director Bobby Lumpkin, Deputy Division Director Miguel Martinez, Security Operations and Assessments Director Tony O’Hare, Laundry, Food Service and Supply Director David Driskell and Region II Director Anthony Newton. Their presence underscored the respect and admiration Warden Sandifer has earned across the agency.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Warden Sandifer for her mentorship, training, companionship, and unwavering commitment to the TDCJ family. She will be truly missed. Within the walls of TDCJ, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence and professionalism among some of the finest correctional staff in the world.

As her longtime friend and colleague, I, Warden Kamilah Coger, proudly salute Warden Sandifer as she embarks on her new journey in retirement. We love you, and we celebrate you today and always.

April is recognized as Second Chance/Reentry Month, and on April 15, 2026, the Rehabilitation and Reentry Division (RRD) hosted the “Built to Rise” event at the Lane Murray Unit. Jill Cale, Female Programs Director, served as the Master of Ceremonies (MC), with special guest speakers Katrina Harris, Kathy Griffin, and Katelyn Smith.

The event featured speaker introductions, panel discussions, and rotating stations staffed by representatives from the Rehabilitation and Reentry Division, Windham School District, and other support services. Participants received pamphlets and valuable resources to help prepare them for a successful transition upon release from TDCJ.

Director Cale also recognized members of the Lane Murray staff by presenting “Caught Building Second Chances” cards, acknowledging their dedication and the humanity they consistently show the ladies in their care.

Thank you to the RRD team for spending time with our population and offering meaningful guidance as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives!

A big shout out to Lane Murray’s Kristen Jameson, Case Manager with RRD, for collaborating and putting the event together. She did a great job!
