On 10/21/2025, at approximately 1:10 pm, a concerned citizen came to Gearhart City Hall to report a suspicious package located at Leslie Miller Park.

An officer checked on the package and determined it was indeed suspicious. The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad was contacted and GPD Officers secured the scene.

Shortly after, the OSP Bomb Squad arrived and examined the package. It was determined to be safe and the package was removed from the park. There is no threat to the public and the area has been opened for all activities.

The City of Gearhart would like to thank the citizen who recognized the package as being suspicious and quickly alerted the police. There was no doubt the package had a high potential of being dangerous. This is a great reminder that if you see something, you should say something.

The Gearhart Police Department would like to thank Oregon State Police, Seaside Police Department, Clatsop County Sheriff's Office, and Gearhart Volunteer Fire Department for their quick assistance with this incident.

GPD COMMUNITY ALERT

Beware of Check Scams – Don’t Be a Victim!

The Gearhart Police Department has seen an increase in check scams recently, especially something called the “Over-payment Scam.” These scams often target older residents, but anyone could be a victim if they don’t know the warning signs.

Here’s how it works:

-Someone sends you a check for more than they owe you.
-They make up a story about why they accidentally sent too much.
-They ask you to send back the extra money, usually by wire transfer, gift card, or another method.
-Your bank may make the money from the check look available right away, but days or weeks later, the check bounces.
-You are then responsible for the full amount, and the scammer is gone with your money.

Example:

You sell a chair online for $200. The buyer sends you a check for $1,000 and says, “Oops, I overpaid, please send me $800 back.” You send the $800, but later the bank tells you the check was fake. You’ve lost $800.

Other Scams to Watch Out For:

1. Mystery Shopper Scam:

You get a letter saying you’ve been hired as a “mystery shopper.” They send you a check and tell you to buy something and wire the rest of the money to them. The check is fake.

2. Prize or Lottery Scam:

Someone says you’ve won money but must pay fees or taxes first. They send you a check to cover those costs, but it’s counterfeit.

3. Fake Job or Car Wrap Scam:

You’re hired for a job or to wrap your car with their advertising. They send you a check and ask you to buy supplies or send part of it elsewhere. Again, the check bounces.

How to Protect Yourself:

-Never send money back to someone who sent you a check.
-Don’t trust checks from strangers. Even if your bank makes funds available, it doesn’t mean the check is real.
-Be suspicious of anyone who overpays or pressures you to send money quickly.
-If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you think you’ve received a fraudulent check or been targeted by a scammer:

Do not cash or deposit the check!
-Save all communications (letters, emails, texts).
-Contact the Gearhart Police Department right away at 503-738-5501 or Seaside non-emergency (503) 738-6311.

Stay safe, Gearhart!

Joshua Gregory

The Gearhart Police Department has recently investigated several thefts from residential and commercial properties, as well as vehicles. We would like to make the community aware of the recent thefts and offer some help in minimizing your chances of becoming a victim.

For residential, keeping your doors locked is essential. Having a home security system is a big help in deterring thieves from entering your home. Home surveillance options are a great way to not only deter criminal activity, but to also give the police evidence to use in an investigation. There are many home security camera options available, and many are budget friendly. These tips work for commercial properties as well. If you are a Gearhart resident who has a mailbox and is traveling out of the area, consider placing your mail on hold with the Gearhart Post Office to make sure your mail does not sit in the box for several days.

For vehicles, make sure you are locking your doors when you exit and take your keys with you. All too often, vehicle thefts, or thefts from items inside a vehicle, are done by opportunistic thieves who simply go around and rattle car doors, hoping one will be unlocked. You should also remember to take anything of value out of the vehicle. If you must leave a valuable item in your vehicle while you are away, make sure you secure the item in a place where it is not visible from the outside, such as locked in the trunk, console or glove box. If a thief sees a valuable item, the temptation to break a window, then grab-and-go, is often tempting.

One last recommendation is to secure your bicycles. We have had some thefts of bicycles that were simply left outside the home, unsecured. If possible, store your bicycle in a garage or locked out-building that keeps the bike out of sight and out of mind.

The Gearhart Police Department is working to saturate the affected areas and increasing patrol efforts to provide physical presence.

If you are a victim of theft, please make sure to report it to the police. If we don’t know if a crime occurred, we can’t investigate it, and we cannot get this type of information out to the public. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 503-738-5501, or stop by our office.
