Following our previous post regarding E-Bikes, weโve received several questions and many complaints about โE-Motosโ that have recently been seen around town.
Unlike E-Bikes, these vehicles do not have pedals and currently do not meet Illinoisโ E-Bike classifications.
At this time, Illinois law considers these vehicles to fall under the category of an โOff-Highway Motorcycle.โ Because of that, they are required to have proper equipment to be operated on public roadways, including headlights, taillights, turn signals, mirrors, registration, insurance, and a valid driverโs license.
Additionally, the City of Geneseoโs Slow Moving Vehicle Ordinance currently prohibits Off-Highway Motorcycles from operating within the city.
We understand these vehicles have become increasingly popular, especially among younger riders. Our main concern is safety and ensuring operators understand and follow the rules of the road.
There is currently pending legislation in Illinois that may create a separate classification and regulations for E-Motos similar to E-Bikes. Until any new legislation is passed, these vehicles will continue to be regulated as Off-Highway Motorcycles.
As always, we encourage everyone to ride safely and responsibly.
