Cancelled tonight!!!
UPDATE 7/16/26 10:50AM: The rescheduled date remains TBD. The agenda posting on the Village website for the August 19 Planning & Zoning Meeting is the commission's regularly scheduled meeting, and not the make-up date for yesterday's postponed meeting.
Tonight's Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting has been postponed. When the rescheduled date has been determined we will post it on this platform. It will not take place this week.
Why the change? Open Meetings Act
The Planning & Zoning Commission meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Given they typically attract few audience members, it normally poses little conflict with Wednesday night concert parking. Tonight’s scheduled P&Z meeting generated heightened public interest. The Village is concerned everyone that wanted to attend may not be able to find accessible parking for the meeting. Knowing this, we do not want risk an Open Meetings Act violation as we aim to accommodate all citizens and allow their voices to be heard.
About the Meeting: We welcome an engaged citizenry, whether it's attending a community event or a land use discussion - such as data centers. Please know, in the case of the Planning & Zoning Meeting, the Village posts the agenda on our website – and in the case of a public hearing – also publishes a notice in The Elgin Courier, and mails information directly to neighboring properties. The meeting scheduled for this evening is a concept plan presentation. It is not a public hearing, and no decisions have been discussed or made by the Village Board because zero information has been shared yet by the petitioner. The purpose of the meeting is to give the Planning and Zoning Commission, which is a group of volunteer citizens, the opportunity to hear and react to the petition.
A future concept review meeting may eventually be brought before the elected Village Board of Trustees. At that meeting, the petitioner would present their plan to the Village Board who would also have the opportunity to react – no vote would take place at that meeting either. If after hearing from the Village Board and Planning Commission the petitioner wants to purse the project further, they would have to continue through the process as dictated by Village Ordinance. That process involves a public hearing where the public would have the chance to present information and ask questions of the petitioner. The process typically takes several months to complete.
The public is always welcome to attend Village meetings. And they are always posted on our website calendar, as well as the digital display board outside Village Hall. We will post the new date for this meeting in the same way, and in addition we will post the information on social media as well. Thank you.
