Our days working here at Geneva State Park are always full of adventure!

While scouting Wheeler Creek for kayaking programs over the weekend, Park Manager Nick and Naturalist Kate spotted a cormorant entangled in fishing line. We were able to capture him, free his wing, and cut the fishing line from his mouth. He eventually swam away a happy bird (after making it a difficult process at each step by showing off his strong bite)! 🚣🏻💪🏼😁

It’s Sustainability Sunday! ☀️

Today, we made solar ovens out of pizza boxes and other household items! We learned about different energy sources and then got to see the free, renewable energy from the sun at work cooking our s’mores!🍫

This is a great activity to introduce kids to renewable energy, reuse an old pizza box, and make a snack! For instructions on how to do this at home, visit: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/stem-activities/solar-oven

Fungi Friday! 🍄‍🟫

These are shelf fungi found along the Yellow Trail! Shelf fungi grow like horizontal shelves on trees and belong to the polypore group, meaning they use tiny pores instead of gills to release trillions of spores. They act as nature’s recyclers, turning dead wood into rich soil. ♻️🪵

Have you seen any of these fuzzy little guys lately during your stay in the park? These are sycamore tussock moth caterpillars! 🐛 They feed almost exclusively on American sycamore trees and will overwinter in cocoons, becoming pale yellow tiger moths. They can range from yellow-green to a pale white, but their red heads and red/orange tufts of hair are distinguishing characteristics!

Be careful if you see them around or in your camper and make sure to use protection when interacting with them! Their bodies are covered in urticating hairs that can break off and cause irritated skin, hives, and rashes. In fact, when they build their cocoons, they will weave these hairs into the silk walls to create a defensive layer against predators!🐦‍⬛🌳

Sustainability Sunday! 📃♻️

Today for our sustainability event, we made rainbow-flecked paper using paper scraps from old program flyers and colored construction paper! This is a great way to recycle paper used for printing, coloring, or other kids crafts. Plus, you get a bonus craft day of paper-making! You can even add in flowers, leaves, or anything else you want to accent your new coloring sheets. 🖍️
