Hatchery biologists collaborated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Park Service, and Iowa DNR to stock Higgins Eye Pearlymussel into the Mississippi River to make up for impacts to the federally endangered species. Lake Sturgeon production season is in full swing! Genoa National Fish Hatchery raises 40 to 60,000 Lake Sturgeon a year. This year they will be stocked in New York, Tennessee, Michigan, Minesota and Wisconsin.
If you are interested in volunteering to tag a Lake Sturgeon, please call Erica to set up a date and time at 608-689-2605. We are tagging in the month of August and September. Hine's Emerald Dragonfly Summer Update!

When Hine's Emerald Dragonfly larvae have grown large enough to be contained by mesh with 500-micron (1/2 mm) openings, they are placed in culture cages in a flow-through culture tank. Most larvae are large enough by mid-June. Flow-through pond water delivers a more ample supply of zooplankton and ensures that dissolved oxygen remains high, and waste products are flushed out of the tank. To celebrate the end of National Pollinator Week, here's another fun fact for you!

Did you know that, according to USDA, over 100 crops here in the U.S. depend on native pollinators to fertilize them and help them grow. Talk about buzz worthy!
