The GFD would like to extend a huge shoutout and a well-deserved congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedic Hannah Roman as she graduated today as a member of the NYS Recruit Firefighter Training Program class No 93. She is now officially a City of Cortland Fire Dept. firefighter, and she still volunteers with us and serves as our rescue captain. Completing this rigorous fifteen-week training program is a huge accomplishment. We are honored and proud to have her among our ranks and can't wait to see what the next chapter will bring! The Genoa and Cortland communities are glad to have her, and we wish her a long, safe, and rewarding career. Keep up the great work!

This morning shortly after 8am, Genoa Rescue, King Ferry Fire Department and Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, Inc. were dispatched to NY 34 between Myers and Bruton roads for a one car MVA. Cars 1 and 2, Engine 2 and Squad 1 responded. Upon arrival C2 confirmed one vehicle had left the road striking a culvert and ended up back on the highway on its wheels. The single occupant driver was still in the vehicle but not trapped. King Ferry units were returned to service, SCIA handled patient care our crew handled traffic control. The scene was turned over to Cayuga County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police and GFD units were back in service in a half hour.

Today, Genoa Engine 2 and several GFD members joined the other fire departments in Battalion 5 at Southern Cayuga Central School for a "mock" DWI drill/demonstration. The simulated accident replicates a scene that could be very realistic when an impaired driver is involved in a crash. Along with the fire departments performing their rescue operations, the participation from Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, Inc., Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, and LifeNet of New York made this a very realistic demonstration of the consequences of drinking and driving. With prom and graduation season upon us, the GFD reminds you to never drink and drive, and we thank not only our members but all the folks who took time out of their day to help put this on.
