Mormon Station State Historic Park

Mormon Station State Historic Park The log cabin museum is a replica of the original trading post built in 1851 by John Reese.

Mormon Station, as it came to be known, was one of the most important trading stations along the Carson route of the California Trail. Mormon Station State Historic Park is a Nevada State Park unit located in Genoa, Nevada. The park interprets the site of the first permanent, non-native settlement in the state, and features a museum (built as a replica of the original 1851 trading post), stockade, picnic grounds, walking paths, and group use areas (available by reservation).

With Mormon Station back to summers hours (10am-4pm, 7 days/week), we have noticed an increase in visitation. This includes more than just the daytime humans, as we are beginning to see regular visits from a large momma bear with her two cubs. They have already actively raided some trash in the area. So, when visiting our park, please be BEAR AWARE!

With the addition of the Kinsey property to the park, we also have added more space to observe the wild visitors who use our park as a sanctuary throughout the day and evenings. With the deer rutting season in full swing, it makes for interesting wildlife viewing in the park this time of year.

Clearly, even the wildlife admire the Kinsey House, as evidenced in the first pic. As for the last pic of one of our late night visitors, I will leave that up to our social media audience; can you identify this elusive creature?

Congratulation to Samantha Szesciorka and her horse Sage, who yesterday became the first person and horse to complete 15 park passport stamps on horseback, earning her a free annual day use pass to Nevada State Parks!

Considering our history with both the California and Pony Express trail, we couldn't think of a more appropriate park to do so!

Also, out Western Heritage festival, on the same day, was a resounding success, with the largest horse parade seen in Genoa for many years, and numerous performance by living history actors, western musicians, art, kids games, and active blacksmithing!

While most of the festival took place on Saturday, we are excited today to see the continued work of blacksmith Tim Mann, who will continue to showcase his knowledge and skill what was one of the most important trades in U.S. History. So come on by if you would like to witness history in action! It is warm inside the N.P. Morrison blacksmith shop!

As spring tries to take hold of Northern Nevada, we have a great many fun and free programs to attend for you this upcoming month of May!

GENOA WESTERN HERITAGE DAYS: Join us for Genoa’s salute to the West with Civil War and Pioneer Encampments, blacksmithing demonstrations, kid’s games, as well as live music, cowboy poetry, and a horse parade on Saturday! Sunday will still include blacksmithing and cowboy church in the morning, but Saturday is the main event!

With spring coming to the park so quickly this year, we are pleased to announce that the park will return to summer hours a few weeks early, beginning on April 15th. At that time, the Museum and Stockade will be open from 10am-4pm, 7 days a week.
