The George West Police Department is looking for School Resource Officer's to join our team. You have to be currently licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and in good standing. We currently do not sponsor cadets who wish to enroll in a regional police academy.
George West is located in the county of Live Oak and is approximately 85 miles from the City of San Antonio and 63 miles from the City Corpus Christi for individuals who enjoy visiting large cities for the day but would rather work and live in a small town setting. Our city and county is very pro-law enforcement and appreciate what law enforcement and first responders do every day in our area. For the avid freshwater fisherman, George West is within quick driving distance to both Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon Reservoir.
We currently have 10 sworn officers and three civilian employees (administrative assistant/records, code enforcement and animal control). Even though we are a small police department, Hwy 59/Hwy 281 and Hwy 59/IH 37 corridors intersect in George West which accounts for many travelers passing through our city. The George West Police Department currently participates in Operation Stone Garden and Operation Lone Star, which are grant funded programs to combat the narcotics and human trafficking that is known to be traditionally utilized by criminal organizations for their illegal activities down those two corridors. These two programs provide both Law Enforcement equipment and ample overtime opportunities upon completion of the field training program.
Currently, our School Resource officers work 8 hr. shifts with every weekend and most holidays off. Officers are assigned patrol units and, if you live in the county (or within 50 miles of the City Limits) and have successfully completed the FTO program, officers have the option of taking their assigned units home (this is subject to change at any time). Uniforms, weapons, and body armor are provided by the department. You may carry your own handgun and rifle if approved.
The successful candidate will partner with our school district, stakeholders and citizens to provide professional police services, utilize smart policing strategies to solve problems, and have a sense of humor. We are interested in an officer who enjoys the job and is willing to give an honest day's work for an honest wage. Our department is committed to the community-oriented policing philosophy and strongly believe in the mentality of “Us and them”, not “Us versus them” and welcome citizen interaction while actively pursuing the criminal element that is in and comes through our town. If you feel you meet what we are looking for, have an eagerness to be a servant-leader, and looking for a rewarding career in a small town setting, the GWPD may be the blue family you have been looking for!

❄️ Cold Weather Alert: Possible Freeze This Weekend – Protect Your Pets ❄️

With a possible freeze forecasted for this weekend, residents are encouraged to take extra precautions to protect animals from cold-related harm. Freezing temperatures can be life-threatening for animals left outdoors without adequate care or shelter.

Under Texas Penal Code §42.092(b)(3), it is considered cruelty to a non-livestock animal to unreasonably fail to provide necessary shelter, including protection from extreme weather conditions such as cold, wind, and rain.

Adequate shelter includes:
• Protection from wind, rain, and freezing temperatures
• Insulation and dry bedding to retain warmth
• A sturdy structure that keeps animals off the ground
• Continuous access to food and unfrozen water

Under Health and Safety Code §821.101(4), Unlawful Restraint of Dog; "Inclement weather" includes rain, hail, sleet, snow, high winds, extreme low temperatures, or extreme high temperatures.

👮‍♂️🐾 Community Reminder
The George West Police Department and Animal Control will be monitoring conditions and, if needed, conducting knock-and-talks to remind citizens of these concerns and help ensure animals are properly cared for during the cold weather.

📞 See an animal in need?
If you observe an animal left outside without adequate shelter or care, please contact local Animal Control or non-emergency law enforcement to request a welfare check.

Thank you for helping keep our community’s animals safe during the cold weather. Awareness and prevention make a difference. 🐾
