Please be advised that there is a confirmed case of New World Screwworms (NWS) infecting a bovine in Zavala County, Texas.
Texas Department of Health Services officials urge residents to keep a close eye on all warm-blooded animals. NWS primarily infests livestock, pets, wildlife, and other warm-blooded animals, including, in rare cases, humans. There is NO human-to-human transmission of NWS infestation.
If you notice suspicious lesions on your body or suspect you may have contracted screwworm, seek immediate medical attention. Larvae should only be removed by a healthcare provider to prevent further tissue damage and illness. Do not attempt to remove or dispose of eggs or larvae yourself.
If you notice suspicious lesions on your livestock, pets, or any other warm-blooded animals, please contact your local veterinarian to evaluate the animal or herd. Officials urge residents to quarantine animals with suspected infections to mitigate the spread of this devastating pest.
The food supply in Texas is currently safe from screwworm. State or federal meat inspectors examine each animal to ensure they do not have signs of disease or pests, including screwworm.
Early detection is key. For more information on detection, reporting, and stopping the spread, please visit screwworm.gov.
