That Door

He pointed to the doorway
with a quiet, grateful smile,
and said, “That door.”

“When I see that door,” he told us,
“I know I’m going to have a great day.”

And suddenly, the simple frame
meant something more to all of us—
the volunteers, the staff,
the ones who watch every arrival
and every easing of a worried mind.

Because it isn’t just a door.
It’s where comfort meets him in the morning,
where laughter waits on the other side,
where acceptance opens wide
and worry slips gently away.

It’s the path to belonging,
to music and stories,
to friendship that feels like home.

That door—
the one he trusts,
the one he looks for—
is more than wood and hinges.

It is a promise we keep
every time we open it:
that inside, he will be safe,
he will be seen,
he will be loved,
and he will have a great day.

A poem inspired by Gene
When we asked him what he is grateful for:
