February and March have been busy months. In addition to hearings and meetings in the Board of Commissioners room at the County Courthouse in Georgetown, I have been participating in events across the county. CDOT gave me a tour the Floyd Hill construction site; I met with west-end constituents to help support the Mill Creek Historical Society at their fun Mardi Gras; I attended the “Jazz Age” fundraiser for Mount Evans Hospice (which serves many Clear Creek residents) and helped sponsor our Sheriff’s Department deputies who gave up their hair to help childhood cancer patients. I also participated in the EPA and Colorado Dept. of Public Health and the Environment meeting in Idaho Springs regarding the next phase in cleaning up old mill tailings in our and Gilpin Counties. I continue to work with DRCOG in order to garner support for future road improvements in our county. I am also working with both the I-70 Coalition and Collaborative Effort to help keep our county safe as we live with the I-70 traffic and construction demands. I look forward to working with our new CC Regional Housing Director and getting more fair priced housing in Clear Creek.

December was a shorter month, so I included January in my Commissioner update here. In addition to our regular Board of County Commissioner (“BOCC”) meetings, I attended the Colorado Counties, Inc. winter conference with commissioners from all 64 Colorado counties to learn more about legislative proposals and how to work together to avoid unfunded State mandates. I also have been attending the monthly meetings of the Clear Creek Office of Emergency Management/Evergreen Fire Rescue/CC Fire Authority/CC and JeffCo Sheriffs to prepare for a fire evacuation drill in my eastern CC district in late spring. My family and I had a lovely Christmas with our son Conrad, who flew in from Boston.
In January, I was elected to serve as the BOCC Chair for 2026, where my focus will continue to be working on strengthening our Budget. Your Commissioners enjoyed visits with our US Representative Neguse and Senator Bennet, and we urged both to support our county. I have been participating in the I-70 Coalition meetings to keep abreast of the Floyd Hill construction and other I-70 issues across our county. I have been working with the CC Regional Housing Authority, which is currently advertising for a new Executive Director. This past week, I gave a presentation to the Denver Regional Council of Governments (“DRCOG”) urging them to include Clear Creek in their Metro Planning Organization, which provides funding for improving local transportation and road/bridge issues. As we in Clear Creek know, I-70 issues in our county can directly impact Front Range and Denver travelers and commerce.

The big news this past month is that Clear Creek voters supported our Clear Creek Fire Authority and EMS to help us all stay safe. The Commissioners also appointed Sheriff Ron Thornton to fill out former Sheriff Harris’s term and appointed Colton Rohloff to serve as County Manager. Your Commissioners have been working closely with County leadership to approve a manageable budget by the December deadline. For fun, my husband Peter and I attended a hilarious comedy show at Slaymakers Cellars and, today, we enjoyed our first day of the season skiing at Loveland!

Happy fall everyone. I included some fun photos from last month’s site visits showing our group tours of Henderson Mine and the new Argo Gondola site. This month, I was able to join my husband for a car trip to Yosemite, but I did Zoom a BOCC budget meeting, and then I flew home early from Sacramento in order to make the next regular BOCC meetings. Last week, I attended a MALT gathering and learned more about its support for Clear Creek County lands, which include Floyd Hill Open Space and Meadow, and lands in the Historic Georgetown and Silver Plume area. I also participated in the I-70 Coalition meeting in Keystone and, along with Interim County Manager Colton Rohloff, advocated for Clear Creek County interests. Your Commissioners continue working on the County Budget and on filling the County Manager and Sheriff positions.

As we reach the official end of summer, here is an update of some of my work on behalf of Clear Creek County the last few weeks.
—The Commissioners and staff traveled up Oh-My-God Road in Idaho Springs to visit the new Mighty Argo gondola development site, opening in late spring ‘26.
—At the Guanella Pass press conference, I spoke on behalf of our County residents needing relief from the overcrowding on Guanella Pass Road during leaf peeping season. Other officials also spoke of the need to obey parking signs and traffic laws or risk tickets/towing in order to allow road space for wide emergency vehicles and oncoming traffic.
—I traveled to the Silverthorne CDOT facility for a discussion about hazmat trucks on I-70, the EJMT and Loveland Pass.
—I met with Evergreen Fire Rescue and residents of Echo Hills to discuss concerns about safety during fire evacuation, the need to harden our homes and how the EFR can help. [As a reminder, the Evergreen Fire Rescue area includes the east end of CCC.]
—I attended the CC Fire Authority meeting with the new USFS District Ranger at the Idaho Springs Town Hall to discuss fire risk and USFS mitigation help.
—I also enjoyed coffee with CCHAT (Community Crises and Health Assistance Team) at Frothy’s and then met with the Senior Resource Center.
—Yesterday, I took an all day gun safety class from the CC Sheriff’s Office at the soon-to-be officially opened Clear Creek shooting range in Dumont.

It has been a busy summer. Among many other events and work sessions, your Commissioners toured the County discussing revenue concerns and possible solutions. We visited several Open Space lands; marched in the Georgetown Parade; said goodbye to long time Clear County leader, Amy Saxton; and welcomed our Congressional representative Joe Neguse to the BOCC. We also met with the Silver Plume leadership in their historic meeting hall; and with the other mayors during our monthly Mayors and Commissioners meetings for the good of the county. Henderson Mine and Mill invited us to tour both sites and meet with the staff of our county’s largest employer. Their product, molybdenum, is still in high demand throughout the world.

It has been another busy month. In addition to the usual BOCC work, I had other opportunities to support Clear Creek County. I was so happy to participate in the Governor’s signing into law the Jake brake muffler requirements to help ease the noise along Clear Creek’s I-70 corridor and the chain up assistance law to help truckers comply with the chain up laws. At St. Mary’s, the BOCC started our six Town Halls to discuss the County Budget issues. The BOCC met with the Gilpin County BOCC to discuss issues of importance to our adjoining counties. I was invited with other local officials to support the Red Rocks Community College 55th Commencement and celebrate the Creek Creek County graduates and others. The BOCC met with the CC Tourism Board to work on attracting visitors to shop in our towns as an addition to their trips to recreate. I also was able to attend the excellent Plume Players Melodrama supporting local historic preservation. (There will be an encore performance this summer!)

Well, this has been a busy four weeks! I spent time helping to take care of a hospitalized family member with help from our son Conrad, I gave blood in Georgetown, worked on Commissioner duties, and attended the Rocky Mountain Village Easter Seals fundraiser in Empire. I was also interviewed on Denver7 News at Slaymaker Cellars in Idaho Springs about impacts on local businesses due to I-70 weather related accidents and how a proposed law allowing vendors to assist truckers in chaining up could help.

Your Commissioners wrote a letter to the Governor asking him to support stronger enforcement of chain law violations on I-70. I was interviewed on Denver7 News by Adria Iraheta regarding this letter. I explained how hard it is for small Clear Creek County to police the 35,000+ vehicles a day driving across our County. I emphasized that it is especially hard in the winter when we have backups due to jack-knifed trucks whose drivers willfully ignored the State chain laws.

All three Commissioners supported this letter to the Governor. Our small County has a disproportionate burden in dealing with the 35,000+ vehicles daily traveling I-70 across Clear Creek County.

Clear Creek County Commissioners say too many commercial drivers traveling the I-70 corridor through the county aren’t respecting current chain laws putting lives at stake and costing millions of dollars. An open letter to Colorado Gov. Jared Polis was unanimously approved by commissioners during ...

I have had a great informative month so far. After the BOCC meeting, I participated in the I-70 Coalition Zoom meeting. I met with the Clear Creek County department heads, County Manager, Attorney and other Board members to work on budget issues for the County. I and the Board joined the celebration for the grand opening of two new Habitat for Humanity homes in Idaho Springs. I also went to Central City to participate in the two day Clear Creek Economic Development Corp. meetings with Gilpin and Clear Creek governmental leaders and business representatives. I then attended the Colorado Counties Inc. legislative overview via Zoom in the beautiful historic Gilpin County Courthouse. Next week, I will be back in the Georgetown County Offices for the Board meeting and other county business.
