Strong crops start from the ground up! 🌽

The Sussex Conservation District is offering FREE PSNT tests to help producers optimize nitrogen applications while protecting our natural resources.

Pre-sidedress soil nitrogen testing (PSNT) plays an important role in helping farmers make informed nutrient management decisions by measuring nitrogen levels in growing corn crops. This tool reduces unnecessary inputs and removes the guesswork from managing manure-based nitrogen.

🌱Please contact SCD before your corn plants have reached a height of 6-8 inches.

📞To participate, call 302-856-3990, ext. 3, or email Dan Holston at [email protected].

Senator Dave Wilson said it best; cover crop is a “win-win” for all!

Cover crops help protect our soil, improve water quality, support local agriculture, and create long-term benefits for our communities and environment. 🌱

On Monday, we had the privilege of welcoming local legislators, representatives, and members of Delaware’s agriculture community to discuss the importance of cover crops. Co-hosted by Blaine Hitchens, the event highlighted the vital role cover crops play in protecting soil health and water quality, while reinforcing the importance of consistent state funding for these efforts.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to all who continue to support Delaware’s Cover Crop Program.

Sussex County Governor’s Conservation Award Winners 🏆

Sussex County is proud to recognize three outstanding leaders who are making a meaningful difference in protecting and enhancing Delaware’s natural resources:

👨‍🌾Agricultural Winner: Tull Farms, Benjamin and Brian Tull
A multi-generation operation led by Benjamin and Brian Tull, manages 1,600 acres across Sussex and Dorchester Counties. Through innovative conservation practices, they are protecting soil health and preserving natural resources for future generations.

🦋Urban Winner: Oak Crest Farms Re-Wild Project
The Oak Crest Farms Re-Wild Project highlights the power of community-driven conservation in Sussex County, transforming six acres of former drain fields into thriving pollinator meadows, mini-forests, and a monarch butterfly habitat. With strong volunteer support and local partnerships, this project improves water quality, supports wildlife, and stands as a lasting model for sustainable land use and community pride.

🏛️Legislator of the Year: Representative Charles Postles Jr.
A lifelong farmer and public servant, Rep. Charles Postles Jr. has championed key initiatives that support water quality, infrastructure improvements, and sustainable agriculture across the 33rd District. We commend him for his dedication to Delaware’s agricultural community and conservation efforts.
