Here is the June/July Madison County Historical Society Calendar:

Starting Friday, April 24th, through August 15th Madison County will be home to the Madison County Historic Marker Challenge! In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, a group of Madison County historic sites and history enthusiasts are partnering to offer a scavenger hunt that highlights historic markers across the County and the amazing stories they tell about our local history. This scavenger hunt is funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation®. This event is free to the public and will be open from April 24 to August 15, 2026. Participate by picking up a copy of the clues at your local Madison County public library, the Madison County Historian's Office, or the Oneida Community Mansion House.

How to Play?

Use the clues to locate each of the 12 markers throughout Madison County (for help you may want to check out the William G. Pomeroy Foundations' Historic Marker map).
hen you find the marker, take a selfie with it!
Check off the site on your Clue sheet. When you have completed your hunt, send all photos and your contact information via email to [email protected]. Or, Drop off your photos and your contact information to your local Madison County public library, the Madison County Historian's Office or the Oneida Community Mansion House.

The Prizes:

Anyone who submits the completed challenge will be entered to win prizes made available by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation®, Madison County Tourism, Madison County public libraries and the Oneida Community Mansion House. The grand prize is an Apple iPad. Additional prizes include special t-shirts highlighting historic markers, free museum passes and local history books.

Starting on Monday, June 1st, the Morrisville Public Library will host a special traveling display entitled “Messages from Survivors: One Family’s Holocaust Legacy Exhibit.” On display the entire month of June in the library's program room. This powerful exhibit, from The Memory Project, introduces the Holocaust through powerful personal perspectives. By sharing stories from a family of survivors, Messages from Survivors aims to help combat Antisemitic stereotypes while transmitting messages they wished to convey to future generations. Visitors can also explore a special “shoebox” filled with six take-home cards featuring survivor photos and stories, a QR code linking to six short videos, and reflection questions that connect their experiences to our lives today. On Tuesday, June 2nd, at 6:00 p.m. the Oneida Community Mansion House will host a special presentation entitled “Oneida Lake History: Facts, Fables and Photographs.” Author Jack Henke will share an overview of his recently published book - Oneida Lake History: Facts, Fables, and Photographs - at the Oneida Community Mansion House on Tuesday, June 2, at 6:00. Henke will discuss Oneida Lake’s importance in state and local history as he highlights groups of people who took advantage of the lake’s bountiful resources. Among these groups were the Oneida Community and the employees of Oneida Limited, many of whom enjoyed the company’s recreational facilities at Lewis Point. On Wednesday, June 3rd, at 5:30 p.m. the Oneida County History Center welcomes author Norm Dann who will speak on his new book “Brothers in Spirit.” Dann will share the story of the close friendship and political partnership between Gerrit Smith and Frederick Douglass, two important American abolitionists. Dann explains how their relationship, which began in the late 1840s with mutual respect, grew into a strong bond that helped shape the anti-slavery and civil rights movements. On Thursday, June 4th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. the Lorenzo State Historic Site will host a “Revisit the Revolution” speaker series at Meiers Creek Brewing Company in Cazenovia entitled “John Dickinson & the Creation of American Independence” The first presentation will be offered by Dr. Jane E. Calvert. Calvert is the founding director of the John Dickinson Writings Project and the author of Penman of the Founding, the first complete biography of Dickinson. From Friday, June 5th through Sunday June 7th the Village of Chittenango will host the 49th annual OzStravaganza! Join the part at the world's LARGEST and LONGEST RUNNING Wonderful Wizard of Oz themed festival. The 49th annual festival includes rides and games, history exhibits, vendors, a live music stage, evening programs, fireworks, a parade, a munchkin mile fun run, three silent auctions (one each day), current OZ authors and artists, and more. This year's special guests include WICKED actress Marissa Bode (Nessarose in the two Wicked Movies), writer/director Hugh Gross (After the Wizard), Gita Dorothy Morena (L. On Friday, June 5th, at 7:00 p.m. the Earlville Opera House will host a special concert with Carsie Blanton. With her unique mix of humor, craft, and social critique, Blanton has amassed a small menagerie of viral hits (Rich People, Fishin’ With You) and a dedicated fan base. In addition to fifteen years on the road with her band, Blanton volunteers as a political organizer, and was recently published in The Nation. Her latest full-length album After the Revolution, produced by Grammy-winner Tyler Chester, came out on March 21st. In summer of 2024, Blanton began releasing her most viral political songs on a new EP, The Red Album Vol. 1. On Tuesday, June 9th at 5:30 p.m. the Madison County Historian’s Office will host a “History Where you Eat” at The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed in Nelson. Come and learn the story of a family that turned a former apple orchard into a popular furniture store, until its closure in 2014, that has been reborn as a vendor market with 65 vendors. In 2018 they opened the Apple Kitchen which serves lunch on weekends. Owners Erica and Patrick Gilmore will tell the story of the history of the property and attendees can shop the vendor space which is a unique blend of art, function, food and decor. On Tuesday, June 9th, at 5:30 p.m. the Oneida Community Mansion House will host a silent book club. Unlike your typical book club, Silent Book Club is more about the actual act of reading than the discussion of books. SBC members gather together to read in quiet(ish!) camaraderie. There's no assigned reading or discussion guides—that's the "silent" part—but we do like to share book recommendations and meet like-minded readers! Come for an hour and read without the interruptions. All readers are welcome, including e-readers! What to expect: Bring your current read, a friend, or come alone! Grab a good seat and settle in for some silent reading for an hour. We’ll announce when the hour is up, and then you have a few options: You can continue reading if you like, or chat with fellow attendees for half an hour about the book you're reading (and hopefully get a great book recommendation and make a new friend!). On Thursday, June 11th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the Lorenzo State Historic Site will host the Friends of Lorenzo Garden Gala. Join the Friends of Lorenzo in celebrating 43 years of support for the restoration and ongoing maintenance of the 1914 Ellen Shipman-designed-garden at Lorenzo. Recognized as one of Central New York’s premier examples of a country estate garden, it continues to draw interest and visitors from across the nation. There will be cocktails, appetizers, raffles, Mansion tours, and more! The Gala will move indoors in the event of inclement weather. Admission to the event is TBD. On Saturday June 13th, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, in cooperation with Visit Madison County and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, will host the 2026 Boat Float n' Folk Festival. Enjoy a day of kayaking, live music, food trucks, demonstrations, lectures and more as we celebrate the Old Erie Canal! This year's "Hometown Heroes" Banner Installation Ceremony will include American Revolutionary War veterans from Chenango County. From Wednesday, June 17th through Sunday June 21st, the hamlet of Peterboro will celebrate Juneteenth. Starting at 12:00 p.m. on June 17th the exhibit The Chronology of Abolition in America: Colonial Period to Reconstruction created by Milton C. Sernett, PhD, will open at the Smithfield Community Center. The exhibition will be open for viewing each day during the celebration from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at no charge. On Saturday June 20th, the gates to the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark will open for the Peterboro Freedom Folk Festival. Four concerts for one price to benefit the GSENHL, starting at 3:00 p.m. with Foxrow, at 4 p.m. Mira Grimm, at 5 p.m. The Westcott Jugg Suckers and finishing at 6:15 p.m. with Rod Macdonald Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate. Bring your chair. Food and drink will be provided by the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department (hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, cold salads and assorted beverages. On Thursday, June 18th, at 6:00 p.m., the Oneida Community Mansion House will host a special “Tunnels & Towers Tour.” The “Tunnels and Towers” experience takes visitors beyond the radical beliefs and practices of the Community and into the basement to discover the storage rooms, vaults, mechanical rooms, kitchens, and laundry facilities that supported the Community’s unique lifestyle. Visitors will also ascend the towers of the Mansion House to gaze out on the nearly 250 acres of gardens, grounds, and trails! You are not going to want to miss this limited small-group tours! On Saturday, June 20th, at 10:00 a.m. , the All Things Oz Museum is participating in I LOVE NY's Path Through History Weekend by featuring “ L. Frank Baum & Early Oz- The beginning of the American Fairy Tale.” Permanent and special exhibits about L. Frank Baum & Early OZ - from the 1900 book, to the Broadway musical of 1903, right up through the movie His Majesty The Scarecrow of Oz which was released in 1914. The exhibits at the museum include first and second edition books, family photos, articles from the era, and a deeper look at the written words, the 1902 musical, the pre-1939 films, and more. To make the afternoon even more fun, we will provide a selection of games for all ages. Inside the barn, guests can explore a Spring Traditions Mini Exhibit featuring historic farming and gardening tools from our collection. This small but meaningful display highlights how local families prepared for the growing season, tended their land, and celebrated the arrival of spring throughout Madison County’s past. Annual traditions include the awarding of the Elinior Robb Troicke Memorial Scholarship and the debut of the annual Journal. A refresh of Beulah Hendrickson's exhibit "Stitched In Time," featuring the folk artist's extensive collection of hand-crafted dolls, will be unveiled. To commemorate Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month, a program on "Building Brain Healthy Habits" will be offered. On Saturday, June 20th, & Sunday, June 21st, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., in recognition of Juneteenth the Peterboro Area Museum will introduce a new exhibit entitled “4 For Freedom.” This exhibit will detail the experiences of four individuals escaping slavery: Harriet Powell, Harriet Russell, John Tyler, and John the Dominie West. Three of these people would make Madison County their permanent home. The display will include photographs, broadsides, and descriptive information. On Tuesday, June 23rd, at 6:30 p.m. the All Things Oz Museum will have a special screening of the recently restored “His Majesty, The Scarecrow of Oz” at Manlius Cinema. An official part of the 2026 NYS Path Through History celebration. His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz (1914) is a silent fantasy film where Dorothy and her friends help the Scarecrow overthrow the cruel King Krewl of the Emerald City. The plot involves the witch Mombi freezing Princess Gloria’s heart to prevent her from loving the gardener boy, Pon, whom the Scarecrow aids in winning her back. This milestone event will feature a performance by Ann Schmitter Bartlow organist, celebrating two centuries of faith and community through the power of music. On Thursday, July 2nd, at 5:00 p.m. Meier’s Creek Cazenovia Farm Brewery will host Dr. Philip Levy as part of the “Revisit the Revolution: Lorenzo’s America 250th Speaker Series.” In commemoration of America’s 250th Anniversary Lorenzo State Historic Site is sponsoring a free Speaker Series featuring highly regarded historians, archaeologists, and authors specializing in the Revolutionary War era. Dr. Philip Levy will present George Washington's Cherry Tree in Fact and Fiction. The series will be hosted at Meier’s Creek Cazenovia Farm Brewery on the first Thursday of the month through November. Starting with Owen Corpin, a descendant of 19th-Century freedom seekers, who will present portions of Frederick Douglass' speech What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Following Corpin, Norman K. Dann PhD will share insights from his new publication about the remarkable friendship of Douglass and Gerrit Smith. The Lingo Family Singers will finish the event, replicating the 19th-century Hutchinson Family Singers. The Hutchinson Family singers were composers and singers of reform songs. The Lingo Family Singers will provide musical renditions throughout the afternoon with introductions by abolition scholar Milton C. Sernett PhD. There is no charge for this event. On Sunday, July 5th, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Chenango County Historical Society, in collaboration with the Chenango County Historian's Office and other community partners, will host the Turtle Island Festival and America's Potluck at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. Part of the local commemorations of America250, a national initiative centered around the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, this free family festival features "America's Potluck" and an outdoor performance spectacle which brings the Haudenosaunee Creation Story to life. The "Turtle Island" experience features a giant inflatable puppet, the Sky Woman Iroquois Dance Theater, and traditional Indigenous music to depict the birth of the world on a turtle's back. "America's Potluck" is an opportunity for neighbors to join one another to share a communal meal, creating a sense of connection and belonging and fostering interactions among people from all walks of life. On Wednesday, July 8th, at 7:00 p.m. the Erieville-Nelson Heritage Society will host a special presentation by Tom Guiller at the Erieville Firehouse. Guiler is the director of museum affairs for the Oneida Community Mansion House. He will talk about not just the Oneida Community, but also Roycroft Community near Buffalo, Byrdcliffe in the Catskills, and many other communal communities around the country endeavoring to reform the social and economic inequities of industrial capitalism by producing and selling art with a social message, while living their everyday lives in communal living. On Sunday, July 12th, at 11:00 a.m. the Town of Madison and America 250 Team plus the James Madison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host a Patriot Burial Marker Ceremony and "Stories of the Stones" at the Indian Opening Cemetery in Madison. The burial marker was made possible by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. Attendees are encouraged to come at 11:00 and self-tour flagged burial markers with a description of veterans and people of note. The dedication begins at 11:30 with the flag. Fort Stanwix will be present in "period dress". D.A.R. and keynote speaker Madison County Historian Matt Urtz are followed by the playing of Taps. On Thursday, July 16th at 5:30 p.m. the Madison County Historian’s Office will host a special two-part “History Where you Eat” starting with a tour of the Oneida Community Mansion House followed by a buffet dinner the Lakeside Landing Restaurant. The event starts with a private historical tour of the Oneida Community Mansion House by Tom Guiler, Director of Museum Affairs. Learn the unique history of the community, it’s communal lifestyle, it’s manufacturing history and it’s culture. Following the tour attendees will go around the corner to the Lakeside Landing Restaurant where a special buffet dinner will be offered featuring prime rib, garlic & herb chicken, broiled haddock, shrimp saffron, mac & cheese, salad and dinner rolls. Tea, lemonade and water will be available. The tour and dinner are $60 and pre-registration is required as seating for this event is very limited.
