Using candles in gold mines was a common practice before electric lighting became widespread. Miners used steel candlesticks with a looped handle, thimble for the candle, and a sharp point or hook to attach them to timber or rock walls. A typical miner used 4 to 6 candles per shift, depending on ventilation and movement. Mule drivers used more due to airflow and mobility. Candles were even attached to mule harnesses to help guide them underground.
