Recruit Week 8 is in the books, and it was another busy one for our recruits.

They continued building experience behind the wheel, driving fire apparatus on public roads and navigating a challenging cone course. Safely operating these large vehicles takes patience, sound judgment, and a clear understanding of their size, weight, and limitations.

The recruits also trained on brush and grass fires, where changing winds, terrain, and rapidly spreading fire can make conditions unpredictable. Vehicle fire training introduced them to another unique set of hazards, including fuels, traffic, and the materials found in today’s vehicles.

Live burns in the double-stack training prop and tower allowed them to put their skills to work in realistic conditions while improving hose advancement, communication, decision-making, and teamwork.

They finished the week learning the basics of origin and cause determination and fire investigations. Understanding how a fire started as well as knowing how to recognize, document, and preserve important evidence plays a major role in preventing future fires and keeping our community safe.

Each week brings new challenges, and this class continues to build the skills and confidence needed for the job.

2nd UPDATE:
All lanes are back open in both directions on I-64. There are still clean up crews on scene for a diesel spill, slow down and use caution through this area.

UPDATE:
All East Bound lanes are currently closed.
1 lane of West Bound is currently flowing.

Scott County Fire Department and GEORGETOWN FIRE DEPARTMENT are responding and on the scene of several injury collisions on I-64 Westbound between the 68 & 70 milemarkers.

Traffic is going to be stopped for some time so plan you drive accordingly and expect long delays.

🔥 TURNING UP THE HEAT ON RECRUIT TRAINING 🚒

Our new recruits recently completed several car-fire rotations using SCFD’s newly built vehicle fire training prop.

Working in teams, they practiced safely approaching a burning vehicle, advancing and controlling the hoseline, coordinating their fire attack, and communicating throughout the operation. Vehicle fires can expose firefighters to intense heat and several rapidly changing hazards, making realistic, hands-on training essential.

Our new prop allows recruits and experienced crews alike to repeatedly sharpen these skills in a controlled environment, while building confidence, teamwork, and good habits before they’re needed during a real emergency.

Scott County Fire crews are on the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision in the 1300 block of Stamping Ground Road.

Avoid this area!! If you are trying to go outbound on Stamping Ground Road, you should still be able to take Frankfort Road to Galloway to get around the area.

Expect that the 1300 block of Stamping Ground Road will be closed for several hours and plan your commute accordingly.

One of our own needs us.

Firefighter Jake Gierlak has spent his time with Scott County Fire Department showing up for people during some of the most frightening and uncertain moments of their lives. Now, Jake is facing an unexpected battle of his own.

Jake was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer and will begin an aggressive course of chemotherapy this week. Treatment and recovery will keep him away from the job he loves while also forcing Jake and his partner, Carissa, to put their in-home pet-care business on hold.

Jake moved to Scott County from Colorado in early 2025 to begin his fire service career. With no immediate family nearby, the months ahead will bring medical expenses, lost income, travel costs, household bills and care for their pets—all while Jake focuses on treatment and healing.

In just over a year with our department, Jake has become a devoted member of our fire department family. Most recently, he helped physically train our newest class of recruits, encouraging them to become stronger and better prepared to serve others.

Jake chose this career because he wanted to be there for people when they needed someone most. Now, it is our opportunity to be there for him.

RECRUIT ACADEMY — WEEK 7

Week 7 is in the books, and this week was all about taking concepts from the classroom and putting them to work on the fireground.

🧯 Foam Operations — Recruits learned the practical uses of firefighting foam, when and why it's used, and then put those skills into practice.

💧 Water Supply Operations — A fire attack is only as effective as the water behind it. Recruits continued building their understanding of establishing and maintaining a reliable water supply and practiced the operations needed to keep crews flowing water.

🏠 Tactical Ventilation — Recruits learned how properly coordinated ventilation can improve conditions inside a burning structure by controlling heat, smoke, and fire gases. They then put those techniques into practice and learned why timing and coordination with fire attack are critical.

Seven weeks down, and each week continues to build on the last. The goal isn't just knowing how to perform these skills — it's understanding when, why, and how they work together on the fireground.

🩸 WE’RE HOSTING A BLOOD DRIVE — AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Scott County Fire Department is partnering with Kentucky Blood Center to host a COMMUNITY blood drive at Scott County Fire Station 1. Bring the family, tour the fire station, and let the kids, and adults see our new apparatus.

Kentucky Blood Center is currently experiencing a CRITICALLY low blood supply, and we want to do our part to help.

As firefighters and first responders, we see firsthand how quickly an ordinary day can turn into an emergency. We respond to vehicle collisions, serious injuries and other incidents where a patient can lose a significant amount of blood in a matter of minutes.

We often take for granted that when someone needs blood, it will simply be there.

But that blood has to come from somewhere.

It comes from people in our community who are willing to roll up their sleeve and give a little bit of their time to help someone they may never meet.

We spend every day preparing to help when our community needs us. On September 17, we're asking you to join us in that mission.

Come by Station 1, donate blood, and help make sure that when the next emergency happens, the blood someone desperately needs is there waiting for them.

During yesterday evening’s thunderstorms, Scott County Fire Department crews responded to at least five separate injury collisions across the county, along with multiple fire alarm activations as the storms moved through the area.

Unfortunately, one of those collisions resulted in the loss of a life.

This is always a good reminder, that heavy rain can quickly create dangerous driving conditions. Reduced visibility, standing water, slick roads, and sudden changes in traffic can leave very little time to react.

When severe weather moves through, please slow down, increase the distance between you and the vehicle ahead, turn on your headlights, and give yourself extra time to get where you're going. If conditions become worse than your ability to safely drive, try to find a safe place to pull off the roadway and wait for conditions to improve. No destination is worth risking your life to reach.

While the storms were moving through, creating very poor conditions on the roads, our firefighters, along with our fellow emergency responders, were out in those same conditions responding to emergencies wherever they were needed.

Please be careful when the weather turns bad. Getting there a few minutes later is always better than not getting there at all.
