If you have a loved one, friend, or neighbor who uses a medical alert pendant or emergency button, please take a few minutes to check on something very important.

Make sure the monitoring company has the right home address, phone number, emergency contacts, and other important information on file.

When an alert is pushed, 911 may only have the information the monitoring company gives us. If the address is wrong or important details are missing, it can make it harder for us to find the person who needs help.

A quick check today can save valuable time during an emergency.

Please help us spread the word and check on the people in your life who use these devices.

Correct information helps us get the right help to the right place faster! ❤️🚑

Operation Blackwater gave Georgetown County Fire & EMS and the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office another opportunity to sharpen a unified skill set we continue to build together.

Interagency coordination isn’t something we introduce when the emergency happens. It’s something we train, practice, refine, and reinforce long before the call comes in.

Communications. Unified command. Shared objectives. Understanding each other’s capabilities. Operating in a way that complements one another.

That’s the work.

When the stakes are high, there shouldn’t be two agencies trying to figure it out independently. There should be one coordinated response built on trust, familiarity, and repetition.

Different uniforms. Different responsibilities. One team when Georgetown County needs us. 🚒🚓

OPERATION BLACKWATER | AUGUST 20

Georgetown County Fire & EMS and the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a joint on-the-water training exercise on the Black River on Thursday, August 20.

Training activity will be concentrated near the Shrine Club area, and boaters traveling through the area are asked to slow to idle speed and use extra caution.
This exercise will include simulated water rescue scenarios. While there will be no actual emergency, responders will be actively training in and around the water.

We appreciate the public’s cooperation as our agencies work together to strengthen coordination, communication, and water rescue capabilities.
Please slow down, give our crews room to work, and help us keep everyone safe.

It has been a demanding weekend for the men and women of Georgetown County Fire & EMS.

Since Friday evening, our crews have responded to 48 calls for service including several motor vehicle collisions, a structure fire involving a rescue, a wide range of medical emergencies, and several utility emergencies.

They’ve done it through extreme heat, oppressive humidity, and powerful afternoon thunderstorms rolling across the county.

Call after call, our crews have continued to answer.

That kind of pace takes more than showing up. It takes training, teamwork, endurance, and a commitment to the people we serve.

We’re proud of the men and women who have spent this weekend on engines, ambulances, and command units doing exactly what they’re trained to do... taking care of people when they need us most.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington, NC has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northeastern Georgetown County until 5 PM today (15 AUG). The storm is moving south at 15 mph and may produce 60 mph wind gusts and penny-size hail, with possible damage to trees and power lines. If you are in the warned area, move indoors to an interior room on the lowest floor and stay weather aware.

Whooooooo called the Fire Department? 🚒

Turns out… this 🦉 guy did! Well… maybe not directly…

Early this morning, Georgetown County Fire & EMS responded after receiving a call about an owl that had become tangled in what appeared to be a crabber’s line and lead weight. After landing on a tree limb, the more the owl struggled, the more entangled it became.

Not on our watch.

After receiving notification from a nearby homeowner, Emergency Manager Loren Wallace, Leslie Horton of Georgetown County 911 (who also happens to be a licensed wildlife rehabilitator) and LT David Scoggins quickly sprang into action.

Getting the owl safely to the ground took a little creativity and some patience, but once it was down, Leslie’s experience took over. She calmly secured the bird while the line and weight were carefully removed from its foot.

The best part?

After a quick check, the owl appeared to be in good shape and unharmed. With one final look around, and a little encouragement from Leslie, it spread its wings and flew right back into the woods where it belongs. 🦉💨

A great reminder that sometimes our calls don’t involve fires, wrecks, or medical emergencies. Sometimes… they’re about helping one of our wild neighbors get a second chance.

If you’re out fishing or crabbing, please take a moment to properly dispose of old line and tackle. What seems like a small piece of trash can become a life threatening hazard for wildlife.

Georgetown County, meet Engine 22...the newest workhorse in the fleet.

Assigned to the Santee Community, Engine 22 was built with one purpose: to go to work.

No gimmicks.
No wasted space.
No showroom attitude.

Just 1,800 gallons of water 🌊, a 1,500 GPM pump, and a full lineup of preconnected hose ready to hit the ground the second the air brakes lock.

And fire attack is only part of the job.

Engine 22 carries a full complement of Hurst eDraulic rescue tools, vehicle stabilization struts, forcible-entry equipment, ladders, ventilation tools, and the equipment needed to handle fires, wrecks, rescues, and whatever else Georgetown County puts in its path.

This is not a pavement princess. 🚫👸

It was built to get dirty.
Built to take a beating.
Built to answer the call.
Built to bring our people home.

Although this video from SCDPS is a few years old, the message is just as important today.

Georgetown County Schools start back tomorrow. That means more children walking to school, crossing streets, and getting on and off school buses.

Please slow down. Put the phone away. Stay alert in school zones and around stopped school buses. One moment of distraction is all it takes.

Good luck to all of our students, teachers, administrators, bus drivers, and parents. We hope everyone has a safe and successful school year!

Both Tyler and James went above and beyond to continue their education, strengthen their skills, and take the next step in their careers. Earning this certification takes a great deal of time, commitment, and hard work, and their accomplishment reflects the pride they take in serving others.

Their continued professional growth not only benefits them individually, but also strengthens Georgetown County Fire & EMS and allows us to provide an even higher level of care to the citizens and visitors of our community.
