Gering Fire Department

Gering Fire Department Serving the citizens of Gering and surrounding area since 1914. We have sent firefighters to Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, Maryland, and D.C for training.

The Gering Fire Department was established in 1914 to respond to structure fires within the city of Gering. Since our establishment, we have grown to serve the City of Gering and the Gering Rural Fire District in all emergency situations. Our combination department has roughly 35 dedicated responders that are highly trained in all aspects of the fire service. Our department devotes a massive amoun

t of hours to training and introducing our firefighters to all aspects of the fire service. We pride ourselves as being ready. Most of our members are EMT's and respond to all medical emergencies within our district. Majority of our members are Pro Board certified as a Firefighter 1 and several are Pro Board certified as Firefighter 2 (Nebraska has a limited number of Firefighter 2 certified firefighters). We have many firefighters certified to operate at a Haz Mat incident. And our specialized training includes 4 Dive Rescue 1 certified divers and one of Western Nebraska's High Angle Rope Rescue teams. Our department also participates in NWCG certified training for wildland fire. Part of our district includes a 55+ home Wildland-Urban interface neighborhood which includes rugged terrain and hills with Ponderosa Pine, Juniper Pine and Western Red Cedars. Because of this, Majority of our members are Red Card holders to the minimum of Firefighter Type II. Our department seeks out as much NWCG training as possible and have firefighters currently in Trainee positions. Currently, we have 6 certified Engine Boss, 6 certified Type 1 Firefighters, 5 certified Type 5 Inicident Commanders, and 1 Type 4 Incident Commander. We have been involved with suppresion efforts on many of Western Nebraska's major wildland fires since the 1980's. In 2016 we responded to 738 incidences, including medical emergencies, technical rope rescue, wildfires, structure fires, dive rescue and community based assistance. We welcome anyone wishing to volunteer in their community. Potential candidates are required to follow a simple and straight forward application process which takes about a month. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Gering Fire Department please call our office at 308.436.2441 or send us a message.

We had a great evening celebrating accomplishments of 5th graders that attended our Junior Fire Patrol program. Our 5 week program teaches fire prevention skills and engages students and their parents in keeping their homes safer. We teach home escape plans, fire extinguishers and providing information to eliminate fire hazards in the home.

Our program has been in existence for as long as we can remember. We thank our partnership with Gering Public Schools and give a huge thank you to the parents for allowing their children to attend.

16 total days assisting other fire departments and trying our damn best to minimize the impact fire has on our ranchers, farmers and amazing Nebraskans

It’s brutal. 24-38 hours of no sleep. Eating smoke. Singeing hairs. Cold temperatures. Feeling extreme heat. Hiking up and down hills plugging 600 foot hose lays all day long.

We do it for each other. Spending time with fellow firefighters is unexplainable, other than we stand side by side, knowing that eventually the fire will go out.

We thank every firefighter that’s been on the line and supporting the cause for the past month. We are especially proud of our Gering firefighters that worked as hard as they could. And we hope for a quick recovery to those Nebraskans that were impacted by some of the most extreme fire behavior we have seen.

Heads up, red flag warnings are being issued tomorrow (3/12/2026) for the Nebraska Panhandle due to low humidity and gusty winds. Winds are expecting to humidity will be around 19% with winds around 45 MPH with gusts to increase.

Please do not be the spark! Residents should taken all appropriate actions to reduce, minimize or eliminate any potential for fires to start.

Due to red flag conditions, burn permits will not be issued through Friday. Additionally, any burn permit that was issued and covers tomorrow are void and expired. If you performed outdoor burning today, it is best to check on your outdoor burn to confirm there are no heat sources that could be affected by the wind.

Stay safe everyone!

Last week we celebrated our department achievements at our annual William H Templar Award Banquet. Every year we celebrate length of service, various achievements and our prestigious Leroy Elliot Firefighter of the Year. What a night!

Miranda Wiebers was recognized for 5 years of service.

Ken Hauck and Nathan Flowers was recognized for 25 years of service and received their Robert L Larsen service award

Jeff Vance was recognized for his long standing dedication to the Gering Fire Department and received our Award of Merit.

We also recognized our Top Ten, which are members that have spent the most hours on calls, trainings and activities. These were Jeff Vance, Darrell Vance, Skip Kelley, Grant Severson, Jordan Todd, Danny Grumbles, Kelsey Brady, Miranda Wiebers and Jennifer Severson (not pictured was Tim Milton).

This year was somewhat different, where we recognized two community members that made an impact during a house fire. Without hesitation, these two citizens stepped in and assist homeowners in escaping their house after a fire cut off the main egress. We are truly thankful for their acts, which completely changed the outcome of the fire.

To close out the evening, we recognize one firefighter as our Firefighter of the Year. Jennifer Severson was voted on by past winners for her achievements and spending over 600 hours of response and training throughout the year. She received our prestigious Leroy Elliot Firefighter of the Year.

We thank the Mayor, Council and the Rural Board for their continued support for our department. Above all, we thank the community and citizens for their appreciation and support for our volunteers!

5 firefighters returned this afternoon after several night operations on the Greyhound Fire east of Keystone South Dakota. Our dedicated members spent several nights monitoring and providing structure protection on the 166 acre fire.

Glad to have them home and warm!

Red Flag situations exist in our district despite it being December. Please refrain from being a spark today. Wind and low RH’s would cause any fire that starts to grow rapidly. Fighting fire in these conditions becomes difficult. Hope everyone stays safe today.
