⚠️ 3 Common Notarization Mistakes That Can Delay Your Appointment — And How to Avoid Them!
Whether you are signing real estate documents, a Power of Attorney, a Living Trust, or any other important document — a little preparation goes a long way. Here are the three mistakes we see most often, and how to avoid them:
❌ Mistake #1 — Signing Before Your Appointment
Many people sign their documents ahead of time thinking it will save time. Unfortunately, in most cases this voids the notarization entirely! A notary must either witness your signature or have you acknowledge it in their presence.
✅ Remember: Do not sign until your notary is present — unless specifically instructed otherwise for that particular document.
❌ Mistake #2 — Wrong or Expired ID
Every signer needs a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. This includes a Driver's License, U.S. Passport, Passport Card, Military ID, or Permanent Resident Card. Expired IDs — no matter how recently they expired — cannot be accepted.
✅ Remember: Check your ID before your appointment — make sure it's current and that your name matches the document.
❌ Mistake #3 — Incomplete Documents
A document with blank fields, missing pages, or missing attachments cannot be notarized. This is especially important for estate planning documents like Powers of Attorney, Living Trusts, and Wills.
