Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center

Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center "Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center provides physical and emotional healing through therapeutic interaction with horses

The benefits of Therapeutic Horseback Riding are well documented. Because a horse's gait is similar to the human walk, riding strengthens and supports the natural motion of the spine and pelvis. This repetitive motion helps balance, coordination, strength, and muscle tone as it gently mobilizes the joints. In addition, riding and interacting with the horse fosters self-confidence and motivation. T

he freedom and independence the Riders experience through Chakota's programs act as a bridge to accomplish and lead to success in other areas of their lives as well!

Our Monday riders were disappointed last week when they got canceled due to storms. Our dedicated staff and volunteers made it possible for the three who could attend today to have fun and productive sessions on Memorial Day!

The bubble wands were delivered to the mailbox just in time to add some fun and laughter. If you’re laughing at that tiny little rider on a horse that’s 5 times too big, just know she picks Rocky every time she can!

Please note, we require helmets on all riders except those who have a medical release.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifices secured the freedoms we enjoy each day and will never be forgotten.

At Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center, we are grateful for the heroes who served with courage, strength, and selflessness. As families gather and flags wave proudly, may we all take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

We also remember the military families carrying both pride and loss in their hearts today. Your sacrifices matter too.

From all of us at Chakota, thank you to those who gave everything for our nation. 🇺🇸🐴

On this day in 2008, Chakota launched its very first pilot season with just 4 riders at LangMor Stables under the guidance of Dave and Kay Langenhorst.

What began in 2005 as a dream officially became a nonprofit in 2007, with a mission to provide individuals with disabilities therapeutic interaction with horses that builds confidence, dignity, and emotional well-being.

Today, under the guidance of a Board of Directors, Chakota serves 24 riders each week with a growing wait list. The day-to-day operations are handled by a dedicated staff and incredible volunteers, who have changed countless lives through the power of horses.

From 4 riders to a thriving program — thank you to everyone who helped make the dream a reality. ❤️🐴

Even though Monday was canceled due to storms we had an incredible first week of the 2026 riding season at Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center! ❤️🐴

The barn has been filled with smiles, laughter, happy tears, and the special kind of joy that only happens when horses and people come together. The returning riders were excited to be back in the saddle experiencing the magic, every session reminded us why Chakota is so special.

Our volunteers — both seasoned and brand new — jumped right in with encouraging words, helping hands, and huge hearts. Watching friendships form, confidence grow, and riders light up around the horses has already made this season unforgettable.

Thank you to everyone who makes these moments possible: our riders, families, volunteers, staff, and supporters. Week one was a beautiful reminder that miracles still happen at the barn every single day. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings! 🌟

We look forward to seeing more riders as they return after family vacations. There are more on the waiting list who are eager to start when we get additional volunteers trained.
