250 Years Ago: Robert R. Livingston writes to his sister Caty (Catherine) He mentioned that he would like letters from his other brothers and sisters to help him feel closer to home, however he didn't hold out much hope for correspondence from some of his siblings: “If Gitty’s (Gertude) laziness is not invincible I may hope to hear from her: however I have little faith in modern miracles."

On a more serious note he also writes," We have reason to believe that our enemy will make great efforts this summer, I hope however by the blessing of God to see them repelled & this country after a Glorious struggle emancipated from the tyranny of an inhuman prince."

Clermont State Hisotic Site would like to take a pause today to remember all of the men and women who have given their lives for their country over the last 250 years.

We would like to tell you the story of Manning Livingston. Manning was born February 16, 1843. He was a descendent of Robert "The Nephew" Livingston, which makes him a cousin to Margaret Beekman Livingston, several generations removed. He joined the American Army to fight the traitrors from the south, on February 19, 1862, just days after his 19th birthday. He was quickly promoted to 1st lieutenant in the 3rd United States Artillery. Initially assigned to the defense of Washington D.C. the 3rd was scattered around the army from the Potomac to the deep south.

The consolidated Batteries F & K, to which Manning was assigned, was, on July 2, 1863, placed near the Emmitsburg Road. The road saw some of the heavisest fighting of the second day of Gettysburg. Two division of traitors attacked a single American division. At some point in this fighting Manning was killed, at 20 years old. The Americans were forced to withdraw, leaving four of the batteries's guns behind. which were recovered in a counter attack. The batteries were then assigned to the artillery reserve.

The next day the artillery reserve was thrown back into battle to help stop Pickett's Charge, the climax of the Gettysburg.

Manning was breveted captain after his death for gallanry and merit. Manning was the only officer from the battery to die at Gettysburg along with 8 enlisted men. His body was recovered and sent home to his family. He is buried in the Saint James churchyard in Hyde Park, NY.
