Some days, it’s the little things that mean the most.
Yesterday, a longtime follower, supporter, and friend of the rescue stopped by. She’s been supporting what we do for many years, and she knew I haven’t quite been up to par lately. She showed up with the sweetest gifts: a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers, a magazine so I could sit down and relax for a little while, a whole cheesecake, and fresh raspberries. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and I truly appreciated every bit of it. The raspberries were even a hit with some of the birds!
She was here to take home a little African Grey with a scissor beak who will require ongoing beak maintenance and special attention. He’s of unknown age and isn’t the kind of bird that immediately charms everyone he meets or eagerly steps up for strangers. In fact, he’s exactly the type of bird that is often overlooked.
But that’s one of the things I admire most about her. She has a huge heart for the birds that others sometimes pass by—the seniors, the special-needs birds, the ones that require a little extra patience, understanding, and commitment. She sees their value and gives them every opportunity to thrive.
While she was here, she also had the opportunity to meet Sammi, a wild-caught Orange-winged Amazon who is at least 40 years old, and it was pretty obvious that it was love at first sight.
I wanted to share these gifts not because of their monetary value, but because they reflect the kind of person she is. Her kindness, generosity, and compassion extend far beyond the people around her and reach every bird lucky enough to find its way into her home.
When a bird leaves here and goes to her family, I know without a doubt that it will be loved, cared for, and accepted exactly as it is, regardless of age, quirks, or special needs.
Thank you for your friendship, your support over the years, and for always opening your heart to the birds that need it most. ❤️🦜
