There is something special about watching children grow up around animals. Lainey has been surrounded by rescue birds her entire life, learning kindness, patience, and respect for these incredible creatures. Cali, as always, was happy to be the center of attention and soak up all the love.

Moments like these remind me why I do what I do. Rescue isn’t just about saving birds—it’s about creating connections, teaching compassion, and sharing the joy that these amazing animals bring into our lives.

🚫 DO NOT FEED YOUR BIRD: RAW OR DRY BEANS 🫘

Many people are surprised to learn that some raw beans can be dangerous to parrots.

Raw and undercooked beans contain compounds that can be toxic, especially red kidney beans, which contain high levels of a natural toxin called phytohaemagglutinin.

✅ Properly cooked beans are generally safe and can be a healthy addition to your bird’s diet.

❌ Never feed:
• Raw beans
• Dry beans
• Undercooked beans
• Raw kidney beans

If you offer beans to your bird, make sure they are fully cooked and prepared without salt, oils, or seasonings.

When in doubt, leave it out!

🦜 Let’s play a game…

This is Rocky on of my personal flock members ❤️

Rocky goes absolutely crazy for bananas. 🍌

Only the fresh ones though. The dried banana chips will earn you the cold wing and possibly a sharp beak if you’re not careful. 😆

So now I have to ask…

What food would your bird commit crimes for?

🚫 DO NOT FEED YOUR BIRD: ONIONS 🧅

Onions, garlic, chives, leeks, and shallots all belong to the allium family. While small accidental exposures are unlikely to cause an emergency, regular or larger amounts can be harmful to birds.

These foods can irritate the digestive system and may contribute to anemia by damaging red blood cells.

This includes:
❌ Raw onions
❌ Cooked onions
❌ Onion powder
❌ Foods heavily seasoned with onion

Always check ingredient labels on human foods before sharing them with your bird.

There are plenty of safer options! Offer bird-safe vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, bell peppers, squash, leafy greens, and sprouts instead.

When in doubt, choose foods that are known to be safe for parrots.

Fresh air and sunshine are wonderful for our parrots, but safety always comes first! ☀️🦜

Today my personal flock and I spent a couple of hours outside enjoying the beautiful late-morning weather. Getting our birds outdoors provides natural sunlight, fresh air, mental stimulation, and enrichment that simply can’t be duplicated indoors.

A few important safety reminders:

✅ Watch closely for signs of overheating.

Unlike humans, parrots do not have sweat glands. When they become too hot, they must rely on other methods to cool themselves. One of the most obvious signs is panting or open-mouth breathing. A hot parrot may also hold its wings away from its body to release excess heat.

If your bird begins panting, it is a sign that they are experiencing heat stress and are struggling to regulate their body temperature. Move them to a cooler area immediately and offer fresh water.

✅ Be mindful of temperature changes.

A bird that has been in a climate-controlled home should not be suddenly exposed to extreme heat. Gradual acclimation is important, especially during the hotter summer months.

✅ Always use a safety measure.

Harnesses, outdoor aviaries, travel cages, or secure outdoor cages help keep birds safe. Even clipped birds can fly, and even the most bonded bird can be startled. One unexpected noise, predator, or gust of wind can change everything in seconds.

✅ Never leave birds unattended outdoors.

Predators, weather changes, insects, and accidents can happen quickly. Your bird should always be supervised when outside.

While our parrots don’t belong confined to our homes, they also cannot safely survive in the wild here in West Virginia. The next best thing is providing safe opportunities to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air they were designed to experience.

A little time outdoors can do wonders for both birds and their humans. ❤️🦜☀️

🚫 DO NOT FEED YOUR BIRD: ALCOHOL

Even small amounts of alcohol can be extremely dangerous for parrots.

Alcohol affects a bird’s nervous system much faster than it does humans and can cause:
❌ Disorientation
❌ Loss of coordination
❌ Breathing difficulties
❌ Organ damage
❌ Death

Never allow your bird access to:
🍺 Beer
🍷 Wine
🥃 Liquor
🍹 Mixed drinks
🍰 Desserts made with alcohol

If your bird accidentally consumes alcohol, contact an avian veterinarian immediately.

Your bird depends on you to keep them safe. What seems harmless to us can be life-threatening to them.

Some days, it’s the little things that mean the most.

Yesterday, a longtime follower, supporter, and friend of the rescue stopped by. She’s been supporting what we do for many years, and she knew I haven’t quite been up to par lately. She showed up with the sweetest gifts: a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers, a magazine so I could sit down and relax for a little while, a whole cheesecake, and fresh raspberries. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and I truly appreciated every bit of it. The raspberries were even a hit with some of the birds!

She was here to take home a little African Grey with a scissor beak who will require ongoing beak maintenance and special attention. He’s of unknown age and isn’t the kind of bird that immediately charms everyone he meets or eagerly steps up for strangers. In fact, he’s exactly the type of bird that is often overlooked.

But that’s one of the things I admire most about her. She has a huge heart for the birds that others sometimes pass by—the seniors, the special-needs birds, the ones that require a little extra patience, understanding, and commitment. She sees their value and gives them every opportunity to thrive.

While she was here, she also had the opportunity to meet Sammi, a wild-caught Orange-winged Amazon who is at least 40 years old, and it was pretty obvious that it was love at first sight.

I wanted to share these gifts not because of their monetary value, but because they reflect the kind of person she is. Her kindness, generosity, and compassion extend far beyond the people around her and reach every bird lucky enough to find its way into her home.

When a bird leaves here and goes to her family, I know without a doubt that it will be loved, cared for, and accepted exactly as it is, regardless of age, quirks, or special needs.

Thank you for your friendship, your support over the years, and for always opening your heart to the birds that need it most. ❤️🦜
