Gettysburg Fire

Gettysburg Fire Volunteer Fire Department seated in Adams County. Gettysburg's first "non-hand power" engine, a Silsby Steam Fire Engine, arrived in 1886.

Operating 2 Engines, 1 Rescue, 1 Ladder Truck,1 Traffic Unit, and various support vehicles to respond to over 700 fire/rescue calls per year. The Gettysburg Fire Department, located in Adams County Pennsylvania, has a long and proud history of public service to the community of Gettysburg and the surrounding areas. The first fire protection in Gettysburg was provided by a bucket brigade in accorda

nce with mandatory action by town council in 1806. In 1808, in addition to the existing bucket brigade, an engine company, an ax company, and a ladder company were formed. Named the "General Meade," the Silsby can still be seen today in the department's museum. The first motorized engine arrived in 1912 and the first aerial ladder truck, a 55' 1888 Hayes with a wooden manual raised ladder was purchased on April 2, 1925. The department has since grown to handle more than 700 fire/rescue calls and 2000 ambulance calls per year. It protects approximately 25 square miles covering a population of 20,000 with 30 volunteer firefighters operating two engines, one truck, one heavy rescue, a traffic unit, support vehicles and 1 boat. The department protects 90% of the Gettysburg National Military Park and celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2008.

A few hours after Company 1 volunteers responded to a motor vehicle collision on Route 15/30 and assisted with several EMS calls, Box 1-1 was alerted around 2200 hrs. for a reported cabin fire at the Artillery Ridge Campground in Cumberland Township. Chief 1 and Deputy Chief 1 responded, and updated information indicated the fire involved a wood shed at the location, with individuals on site attempting to extinguish the flames.

Deputy Chief 1 arrived and was directed by campers to a 12-by-20-foot shed, where smoke was visible coming from the door. Several used fire extinguishers were found near the entrance. Campers on scene reported that the main fire had been put out and confirmed that no one was inside the structure.

Further investigation revealed a small fire still smoldering along the interior wall, just left of the door. The shed was used for firewood distribution. Engine 1-2 arrived, deployed a front bumper line to fully extinguish the remaining fire, and performed overhaul operations in the affected area. Engine 22 provided lighting support, with all other units staged at the campground’s main entrance.

Chief 1 assumed command and the investigation determined the fire to be accidental, caused by a faulty electrical cord.

Quick action by several campers limited the damage to the shed and helped prevent further extension beyond the fire building.

On Sunday, June 14, 2026, a pre-alert was issued for Box 1-7 in Straban Township on Line Drive for a reported house fire. Additional information from ACDES 911 indicated there was an outside fire with possible extension to the home, as the caller observed fire and smoke coming from the property.

Fire Police Lieutenant Peters informed Deputy Chief 1 that the fire appeared to have been extinguished but requested the fire department continue to investigate.

Deputy Chief 1 arrived and found normal conditions on the exterior of a two-story single-family dwelling with an attached garage on the D side, as well as several people standing outside. Upon further investigation, the homeowner explained he was alerted to the fire by a passing citizen. Acting quickly, the homeowner deployed the "Green Line" and began attacking the fire, which had begun melting the siding on the house.

Engine 1-2 and Tower 5 crews checked the interior of the home for fire extension and pulled back the siding to ensure no hidden fire was present.

Thanks to the vigilance of the passerby and the homeowner's prompt response, the house was spared from significant damage.

Units remained on scene for approximately 30 minutes, with Deputy Chief 1 having the Line Dr. Command.
