🏍️ Electric Motorcycle Safety & Legal Reminder

Electric motorcycles such as Sur-Ron and Talaria bikes have grown in popularity in recent years. While they may look different from traditional motorcycles, they are considered motor vehicles under South Dakota law and must comply with all applicable traffic laws.

Operators must:
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Maintain liability insurance
• Maintain valid state registration
• Wear approved eye protection
• Wear a helmet if under 18 years of age
• Be equipped with appropriate lighting

These vehicles may not be operated on sidewalks, over curbs, through business lawns, or in other areas not intended for motor vehicle traffic. They are required to follow the same rules of the road as any other motor vehicle.

We have observed riders operating these vehicles in ways that create safety concerns and violate state law. Parents should understand that these are not toys and are not intended to be ridden freely throughout the city without regard for traffic laws. Electric motorcycles carry the same responsibilities as traditional motorcycles.

Before purchasing or allowing a child to operate one of these vehicles, please take the time to understand the legal requirements and safe operating practices.

Our goal is education and safety for everyone using our streets, sidewalks, and public spaces.

Drivers will see more law enforcement on the road from May 11 – 31, 2026, as part of the Click It or Ticket high-visibility seat belt enforcement campaign.

Seat belts save lives — and the facts prove it:

• Seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45%.
• You are more likely to be ejected from a vehicle during a crash if you aren’t buckled up.
• Air bags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them.
• Unbuckled passengers can become “human projectiles” during a crash, seriously injuring themselves or others in the vehicle.

If law enforcement spots someone unbelted, they will issue a ticket. Law enforcement writes tickets to save lives.

No matter how short the trip is — buckle up every trip, every time.
