🚨 SUMMER SAFETY CAMPAIGN: Never Leave Children or Pets in a Vehicle 🚨

As summer temperatures rise in Gettysburg and across Pennsylvania, the Gettysburg Police Department wants to remind everyone of a serious danger: A parked car can become a deadly oven in minutes.

Even on mild days, the interior of a vehicle can quickly reach dangerous temperatures — rising more than 20–30 degrees in just 10 minutes. Children and pets are especially vulnerable and can suffer heatstroke or worse in a very short time.

Never leave a child or pet in a car — not even for “just a minute.”

Important Summer Safety Tips:
• Always take children and pets with you when you exit the vehicle
• Never leave them in the car, even with windows cracked or the air conditioning running
• Use the “Look Before You Lock” habit — check the back seat every time you park
• If you see a child or pet alone in a vehicle, call 911 immediately
• Teach older children never to play in or around unattended vehicles
Reminder: Cracking the windows does not keep the vehicle safe. The life you save could be your own child or beloved pet.

This is a year-round risk, but especially critical during the hot summer months. Let’s work together to keep our families and pets safe all season long.

If you see someone in distress, contact Gettysburg Police Department right away.
Stay safe and stay aware, Gettysburg! ❤️👶🐶

🚨 New Law Alert: Paul Miller’s Law Takes Effect in Pennsylvania 🚨

Gettysburg drivers, starting June 5, 2025, Paul Miller’s Law makes it illegal to use a hand-held cell phone or other interactive mobile device while driving — even when stopped at a red light or in traffic.

This important law is named in memory of Paul Miller Jr., a 21-year-old who was tragically killed in 2010 by a distracted driver.

What’s Prohibited:

• Holding and using your phone for calls, texting, browsing, social media, or any other purpose while operating a vehicle

• Exceptions: Hands-free use (Bluetooth, voice commands, or mounted devices) is still allowed, as are emergency calls to 911 or law enforcement

Safety Tip: Put your phone away before you start driving. Use “Do Not Disturb While Driving” mode or pull over safely if you need to make a call.

This law helps reduce distracted driving crashes and saves lives. Let’s all do our part to keep our roads safe!

🐻 BEAR SIGHTING – Hanover Street Area
Gettysburg residents, the Gettysburg Police Department has received reports of a black bear sighted this morning in the Hanover Street area of the Borough.

While black bears are generally shy and tend to avoid humans, we want everyone to stay vigilant and take proper precautions.

Safety Tips & Precautions:
• Do not approach the bear or attempt to take photos/videos up close
• Keep all pets indoors — bears can be attracted to pet food and may perceive small dogs as prey
• Supervise children closely when outside and never leave them unattended
• Secure all trash in bear-resistant containers and bring bird feeders inside at night
• Make noise when walking in wooded or low-visibility areas
• If you encounter the bear, do not run — back away slowly and give it plenty of space to leave
• Never feed bears or leave food/pet food outside that may attract them

If you see the bear, please report the sighting to the Pennsylvania Game Commission or Gettysburg Police Department (non-emergency: 717-334-7548).

For more detailed information on living safely with bears, we strongly recommend visiting http://bearwise.org.

A video of the bear from this morning is attached to this post.

Thank you for helping us keep our community, pets, and wildlife safe! 🐻🐶

🚨 Memorial Day Weekend is Here, Gettysburg! 🇺🇸🌧️

As we kick off the holiday and honor our fallen heroes, let’s keep safety front and center — especially with rain in the forecast.

Wet Weather Driving Tip: Slow down and increase your following distance. Roads can become slippery quickly, and hydroplaning is a real risk.

Safety Tip: Designate a sober driver before the celebrations begin.

Drive carefully and enjoy the weekend responsibly! 👮‍♂️🚗

🚔 National Police Week: Honoring Our Heroes 🚔

This week marks National Police Week, established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 to honor law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Observed annually from May 15–21, it is a time for our nation to remember and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

On Friday, May 8th, PFC McDonald proudly represented the Gettysburg Borough Police Department at the Adams County Police Memorial Service held at the Emergency Operations Center. We were truly honored to participate in this meaningful annual event alongside our law enforcement partners across the county.

To all our officers — past, present, and future — thank you for your courage, dedication, and daily commitment to keeping our community safe.

We especially remember and honor our fallen brothers and sisters. You are gone but never forgotten. 🖤💙

🚨 SCAM ALERT: Fake Borough Planning Commission Invoices Circulating in Gettysburg 🚨

Gettysburg property owners and residents — BE ON HIGH ALERT!

Scammers are sending very convincing fake invoices pretending to be from the Borough of Gettysburg Planning Commission. These emails reference specific property addresses and construction projects (such as chimney removal, additions, porch work, or window replacements) to appear legitimate.
Here is an example of the fraudulent invoice being used in this scam:

[Image of the fake invoice and email attached]

Key Warning Signs:
• The invoice demands a large “Application Approval Fee” totaling $3,500.00
• It instructs payment via wire transfer
• It states that a signed copy of the invoice and wire receipt must be returned by email
• It pressures you to act quickly to “release final approval”
This is 100% FRAUDULENT.

✅ Important Facts:
• The Borough of Gettysburg does not send planning approval invoices or fee demands by email with wire transfer instructions.
• Legitimate fees are paid in person or through official Borough channels at 59 East High Street — never by wire transfer.
• Real Borough staff will never demand immediate payment via email to “finalize” your approval.

What You Should Do:
1. Do NOT pay anything or reply to the email.
2. Do NOT open attachments or send any wire receipts.
3. Delete the email immediately.
4. Report it to the real Borough office.

How to Verify Legitimate Requests: Always contact the Borough of Gettysburg Planning Department directly by calling 717-334-1160 extension 224 or visiting their office at 59 East High Street.

Never use contact information provided in suspicious emails.

We are actively working with the Borough to address this scam. If you receive anything like this, please let us know right away — your report helps protect others in our community.
Stay vigilant and protect your hard-earned money! 👮‍♂️🛡️
