Today, we were pleased to welcome Richard Satterwhite, co-founder of MANUP Buffalo, Inc., to the Amherst Center for Senior Services - NY for an important discussion on men's health, with a special focus on prostate cancer awareness and early detection.

At the Center, we believe healthy aging begins with access to information. That's why we regularly invite experts, healthcare professionals, and community leaders to share their knowledge on topics that impact the well-being of older adults and their families.

Prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting men, yet many people are unaware of the risk factors, warning signs, and screening options available to them. Educational programs like today's presentation help empower individuals to have informed conversations with their healthcare providers and make proactive decisions about their health.

Also, a special thank you to our own John Jones from the Center's Senior Support Network team, who prepared a hearty breakfast for attendees. Sharing a meal together helps create a welcoming environment where participants can connect, engage in meaningful conversations, and build community while learning about important health topics.

We encourage everyone to take advantage of the educational programs offered at the Center. You never know when a presentation, conversation, or new piece of information could make a meaningful difference for you or someone you love.

We’re proud to share some exciting news! Our Center has received an Honorable Mention in the 2025 National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) Programs of Excellence Awards.

This national recognition honors our Senior Center on the Move program, an outreach initiative led by our Senior Support Network team. Through this program, we bring information about our programs, support services, nutrition resources, and recreational activities (and demonstrations, too!) directly to older adults throughout Amherst by visiting senior housing communities, local organizations, and community events.

This recognition from NISC reflects the dedication and compassion of our staff and the positive impact they make every day in reducing social isolation and improving quality of life. Congratulations to our amazing staff, and thank you to everyone who helps make our outreach efforts possible!

πŸ“ Upcoming Senior Center on the Move visits:
β€’ Sweet Home Apartments – June 18 at 1:00 pm
β€’ Amherst Ridge Apartments - June 23 at 1:00 pm
β€’ Amherst Town Apartments - June 30 at 1:00 pm
β€’ St. Gregory the Great Parish – July 13 at 1:15 pm

Do you have friends or family living in one of these communities who are not yet members of the Amherst Senior Center? Invite them to attend and learn more about all we have to offer!

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave individuals who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their courage, sacrifice, and dedication helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today. We are especially mindful that many within our senior community have personal connections to those who served and sacrificed, whether as veterans, family members, or friends.

As we gather with loved ones and enjoy the unofficial start of summer, let us also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and express our gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

From all of us at the Amherst Center for Senior Services, we wish you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Honoring 3 WWI Veterans, 4 WWII Veterans, 1 Korea Veteran, 1 Vietnam Veteran and 1 Cold War Veteran in Amherst. Today I stopped by the George F. Lamm American Legion Post #622, 962 Wherle Dr. Williamsville, NY 14221, to pay my respects to 10 veterans whose remains are unclaimed. Public viewing is happening today for anyone who wishes to stop by. Tomorrow, these veterans will be put to rest at the WNY National Veterans Cemetery in Corfu. Thanks to the Patriot Guard Riders of New York’s Veterans Recovery Program, unclaimed cremated remains of veterans are located, identified, and interred with the military honors they so richly deserve.

On Friday 5/22, at Noon, the Veteran Urns and US Flags will be transferred from the Post by motorcade to the National Veterans Cemetery. If you wish to honor them as they pass by, the current route is right out of the Post onto Wherle, right on Union Road, right on Main Street (Route 5) and then heading east.

A significant number of organizations helped make this possible - thank you to all involved. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
