We hope you'll join this FREE program tomorrow featuring Buffalonian Norman Weinberg!

Join us for a conversation with Norman Weinberg about his book “Commandment,” moderated by Rabbi Anat Moskowitz. Part science-fiction and part historical, “Commandment” is a novel exploring the consequences to humanity of a devastating plague brought by a microbe for disobeying the commandment. Almost prescient, Dr. Norman Weinberg, an accomplished scientist, began writing this book four years before the Covid-19 pandemic appeared with its devastating and deadly effects. The Blessing of Washing Your Hands and Wearing a Mask

In Jewish tradition, we ask for and offer blessings at both sacred moments (at a wedding) and during moments of daily life (when seeing a rainbow). Check out this video with Cantor Arlene from Congregation Shir Shalom reciting the blessing for washing your hands and wearing a mask.

Pass the Shofar!

The month of Elul is a time to prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Each morning of the month (except on Shabbat) it is customary to blow the shofar (a hollowed-out ram's horn).

The blast of the shofar is a spiritual alarm, a wake-up call to arise from our summer slumber and begin the work of reflection in advance of the High Holidays.

Check out this mix of Jewish Buffalonians blowing the shofar and virtually passing the shofar to one another!

We hope you'll record a video of yourself blowing a shofar during the month of Elul (August 21 - September 18) and share it with the hashtag #BuffElul2020

“We welcome the news about Israel and the United Arab Emirates normalizing relations and want to thank President Trump and his Administration for their role in this historic achievement,” said Mark Wilf, chair of the Board of Trustees of The Jewish Federations of North America. “The two countries have so much to gain from working together and this decision could pave the way for greater recognition of Israel throughout the region and increase the prospects of peace.”

Help spread the word. For the 11th year, Buffalo Psychiatric Center will be hosting the annual Survivors of Suicide Loss Day program on November 17, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This program is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and we know from past experience that this program can help those who have lost loved ones to suicide find comfort and understanding as they move forward in dealing with their grief. We will gather in the Butler Rehabilitation Center for the free program which runs from 1-3 p.m. after the registration period from noon to 1 p.m. Lunch is provided. We encourage advance registration to assist us in planning, but walk-ins are always welcome. Call 816-2014 or email [email protected]. Please share this information.
I find it very sad and disturbing that here in Buffalo we do not have have a community notification system (i.e. someone that takes the lead), like Syracuse does where all law enforcement agencies, synagogues are notified immediately during such as the horrific event that happened in Pittsburgh. I personally learned of the incident long before it hit the news wires due the security protocols that exist in Syracuse. Please join me in developing such a system here! We needed it yesterday.
Thank you Rob Goldberg for sharing our Israel Partnership with the Buffalo community. https://www.facebook.com/p2gwgalil/posts/1817667334951477
