As a thank you to all of our participants in Buffalo Jewish Teen Initiative experiences this past year, our teens are receiving a gift bag with a book (Every Day, Holy Day by Alan Morinis for underclassman, Lessons in Leadership by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks for upperclassman), a pennant for each of the experiences they completed, and a certificate for teens that served as leaders on various committees throughout the year.

Even though this past year was unlike any other, we are so grateful for our amazing teens who continued to learn, engage, and lead JTI programs!!

Nancy Fernandez Performs for Made in Buffalo 2021

Those who call Buffalo home, whether or not they still live in the community, know the sense of pride and closeness that makes Buffalo special. There is a deep connection and love of this place, and we think it should be celebrated.

Made In Buffalo, an ongoing series powered by the Buffalo Jewish Federation, will shine a spotlight on those famous Buffalonians who cut their teeth right here in our backyard.

The purpose of Made in Buffalo is to celebrate a personality who can lay claim to being “made” in our region and allow the Buffalo Jewish Federation to provide a dynamic program as a gift to the greater community.

On Sunday, April 25, 2021, Made in Buffalo featured Broadway star (and Buffalo native) Cheryl Stern who dazzled the virtual crowd with jazz and pizazz! She was joined by a number of local Buffalo artists, as well as some friends from Broadway. Watch the full event here: http://bit.ly/WATCHMADEINBFLO

Meet Nancy Sterman Fernandez: Nancy is a songwriter and performing artist born and raised in Buffalo, NY. In 2007, She co-created Los Angeles-based band, Madame Trash Heap. For four rockin years they were a mainstay of the LA music scene, putting out several EP’s of original, soulful rock. After moving to Buffalo, Nancy joined forces with some veteran Buffalo musicians to form Dirty Couture. After recording their first album and having a lot of fun playing all over Buffalo, domestic life and motherhood forced a semi-retirement. Nancy is still writing and playing music; mostly to her phone these days, but looks forward to getting out on stage again when life gets a little more safe for everyone. If you like her lyrics, then check out http://www.thegoddessrevival.com for more original writing.

We had an AWESOME time last night at the Jewish Teen Initiative’s Celebration of Learning! We spent the evening reflecting on the year, celebrating all of our teens’ accomplishments, and enjoying ice cream with friends!!

We are beyond greatful for all of our teens who worked so hard during this unprecedented year to bring JTI experiences to life. Our teens showed that Judaism will be carried on by the next generation of young Jewish leaders in Buffalo.

Thank you to all of our teens for an incredible year, we can’t wait for what’s to come!

Meet Big J Blues: Big J Blues plays the blues the way they were meant to be played…from the gut. B.B. King said “You don’t choose to play the blues. The blues choose you. You play it because you have to.” Big J approaches his music with the mantra “It’s all about the feeling.” Sitting atop his custom Mississippi drum machine, Big J stomps his way throughout Western and Central New York spreading this gospel.

Born in Buffalo, Big J spent 12 years honing his chops working the LA bar band scene after a four year crash course in the Blues Mecca that is Chicago, IL where he studied under the feet of such greats as Junior Wells, Otis Rush, Koko Taylor and Buddy Guy. Big J soaked it all up like a sponge. In LA J befriended JJ “Bad Boy” Jones who would readily dole out welcomed advice to the young guitarist in a no nonsense way that only a seasoned bluesman can provide. Now back home in Buffalo, J brings his unique style and passion for music to venues across New York as well as performances in Florida and New Orleans. Big J delivers the blues you can use! Boogie chillun!

Help spread the word. For the 11th year, Buffalo Psychiatric Center will be hosting the annual Survivors of Su***de Loss Day program on November 17, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This program is sponsored by the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention, and we know from past experience that this program can help those who have lost loved ones to su***de find comfort and understanding as they move forward in dealing with their grief. We will gather in the Butler Rehabilitation Center for the free program which runs from 1-3 p.m. after the registration period from noon to 1 p.m. Lunch is provided. We encourage advance registration to assist us in planning, but walk-ins are always welcome. Call 816-2014 or email [email protected]. Please share this information.
I find it very sad and disturbing that here in Buffalo we do not have have a community notification system (i.e. someone that takes the lead), like Syracuse does where all law enforcement agencies, synagogues are notified immediately during such as the horrific event that happened in Pittsburgh. I personally learned of the incident long before it hit the news wires due the security protocols that exist in Syracuse. Please join me in developing such a system here! We needed it yesterday.
Thank you Rob Goldberg for sharing our Israel Partnership with the Buffalo community. https://www.facebook.com/p2gwgalil/posts/1817667334951477
