Last Friday, Buffalo Jewish Federation leaders attended the WNY Women's Foundation's Leadership Summit, an annual effort to empower women leaders and build community.

The event featured 1,000 professionals along with allies, entrepreneurs, advocates, volunteers, speakers, hosts, moderators, panelists, and changemakers who gathered to invest in themselves, learn about others in WNY, and network. Because Federation understands the power relationship building and professional development.๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’ช

And for our final post on the last day of May and Jewish American Heritage Month is an ode to the rich history of Jewish Scouting! This past Shabbat - celebrated as our community's annual Scout Shabbat - recognized 100 years of the National Jewish Committee on Scouting (NJCOS), an organization that prepares young Jews to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes through values of Judaism.

The history of past and current participation among Jewish Buffalo is extensive! Read on in Friday's Spotlight: https://buffalojewishfederation.org/celebrating-a-century-of-jewish-scouting/

Around 150 people gathered in Old Erie County Hall yesterday to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month. During The Art of Belonging - a program led by Family Court Judge Brenda Freedman - judges, lawyers, law clerks, courthouse staff, and Jewish community members were treated to Jewish American trivia by M. Kim Babat, Esq. and performances by Cantor Susie Lewis-Friedman rooted in Jewish American music and theatre. NYS Supreme Court Judge Peter Weinmann demonstrated how to blow a shofar. And Federation CEO Miriam Abramovich delivered the keynote address, framing antisemitism through a historical lens and urging deepening our community relationships.

Federation thanks the New York State Unified Court System and the programโ€™s Jewish American Heritage Month Subcommittee for this meaningful opportunity to celebrate Jewish heritage publicly and with influential community leaders!

That's a wrap on Student to Student for the 2025-2026 school year! Last week, Noah and Oz presented to around 85 middle schoolers at West Seneca Middle School, sharing background on Jewish culture and the differences in their own families' lives as Reform and Conservative Jews, respectively. The middle schoolers asked thoughtful and curious questions and learned about their Jewish peers in Western New York.

Student to Student is a proven, classroom-based experiential program that brings Jewish and non-Jewish students together to learn about Judaism through personal storytelling. Jewish high school Student Presenters visit local high schools and middle schools with few, if any, Jewish students to share their experiences. This teen leadership opportunity, managed exceptionally by Federation's Community Relations Manager, Rachel Beerman, reached about 1,000 students this school year, from private schools to public schools, the Northtowns to Hamburg, and from City Honors to West Seneca.

This week, over 400 leaders from 41 states, representing dozens of Federations and organizations -including Buffalo- gathered in Washington DC to raise our voices about the state of security for Jews in America. They met with over 200 Congressional offices and participated in the introduction of a new, comprehensive and much-needed Jewish American Security Act.

As we approach the holiday of Shavuot, the holiday we call Zโ€™man Matan Torateinu, the time of the giving of the Torah, we are deeply aware of the beauty of Jewish life, and the miracles that have allowed us to carry our teaching forward, from Mt. Sinai, across thousands of years, to today. We are not the first generation to face safety and security challenges for Jewish people, and the Buffalo Jewish Federation will not flinch from that responsibility.
