On January 8, 2026 at 8:15 pm Northern Sonoma County Fire was dispatched to a cow stuck in a ravine. Units arrived at scene and determined the need for a large animal rescue team. Graton Fire Protection District, one of two large animal rescue teams in Sonoma County responded.

Bob, the 2000 pound 15-year-old Holstein steer had been stuck in the ravine for hours, while Bob’s owners unsuccessfully attempted to get him out.

Graton Fire, Northern Sonoma County Fire and Bob’s owners worked to develop a plan to get Bob out. At 11:30pm Bob was finally removed from the ravine.

In addition to thanking Graton Fire, we wanted to thank the Halter Project for their support. The Halter Project was started by Julie Atwood in 2013 to assist with large animal rescues. Since that time the Halter Project has provided grants for equipment, led and funded large animal rescue training in Sonoma County. Thanks to help from the Halter Project, Sonoma County has two large animal rescue teams, the one led by Graton Fire District and one led by the Sonoma Valley Fire District.

Chief Marshall Turbeville and Northern Sonoma County Fire continue to lead efforts that recognize the vital role prescribed fire plays in protecting our communities and restoring healthy landscapes. This article from The Christian Science Monitor highlights how, across California and here in Sonoma County, intentional fire is being used to reduce wildfire risk and promote resilience. Through collaboration with landowners, Fire Forward, and community partners, Chief Turbeville and our team are helping ensure fire remains a tool for safety, stewardship, and renewal.
