FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chatham Police Department Addresses Community Concerns Regarding Homeless Individuals and Registered S*x Offenders

The Chatham Police Department is aware of the ongoing community concerns regarding homeless individuals frequenting the gazebo within the Village.

Over the past several weeks, officers have responded to numerous complaints and have conducted regular patrols and enforcement efforts in the area. The individuals involved have been offered assistance, housing resources, and support services through local agencies and outreach organizations on multiple occasions. To date, those offers of assistance have been declined.

The Department also confirms that one of the individuals currently being discussed publicly is listed on the New York State S*x Offender Registry as a Level 2 registered s*x offender. Information regarding registered s*x offenders is publicly available through the New York State S*x Offender Registry.

Last week, that individual was arrested by the Chatham Police Department for the felony offense of failing to report a change of address as required under the New York State S*x Offender Registration Act. The individual is now back in compliance with registry requirements.

The Department also wants to clarify that the individual does not have residency restrictions associated with his original conviction and is not currently on parole or probation.

The Village gazebo is open daily from 8:00 AM until dusk. Individuals found occupying the area outside of posted hours are being instructed to leave, and enforcement action is taken when appropriate violations occur.

The Chatham Police Department understands and shares the concerns expressed by residents and parents. However, it is important for the public to understand that there are legal limitations on law enforcement authority. Individuals cannot be arrested solely for being homeless, and adults cannot be forced to accept housing, shelter, or social services if they choose to refuse assistance.

The Department also reminds residents that there are currently four registered s*x offenders residing within Village limits. Information regarding registered offenders is publicly accessible through the New York State S*x Offender Registry.

The Chatham Police Department remains committed to protecting public safety, enforcing Village laws and regulations, and working collaboratively with county agencies, mental health providers, and community organizations to address ongoing quality-of-life concerns in a lawful and responsible manner.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity, criminal behavior, or local law violations directly to law enforcement.

Congratulations Brian.
