Ghent Residences on Village of Chatham Water – Boil Water Order

FROM: Village of Chatham, NY Alert: BOIL WATER ORDER EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

A Boil Water Order is in effect for Village of Chatham water users in Ghent from 2289 State Route 66 and south. Please boil all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and other consumption purposes. The order will remain in effect through at least Tuesday, September 1. We will notify residents when the order is lifted. Please share this notice with affected neighbors.

Town Board Update on Storm – 7/30/26

The Town Board met by emergency session twice in the last 24 hours to discuss emergency response to the recent rain storms. We will continue to monitor throughout the day. As the storm begins to wind down, we wish to update residents. As of this morning, we have zero weather-related injuries to report.

The Ghent Highway Department and Highway Superintendent Ben Perry did a great job keeping our roads clear and passable. As of this morning, only Arch Bridge Road and Hickory Hill remain closed, and are expected to be opened within hours of this post (32 roads countywide remained closed as of yesterday). With the heavy wind damage and downed trees from earlier this month, some culverts needed debris clearing, and the amount of rain strained even our well-prepared drainage systems. It was clear all the work the Highway Department does throughout the year to keep roadside culverts clear paid dividends, as flood waters rose. The Town Board thanks the entire team for their hard work and diligence.

The Ghent Volunteer Fire Company #1 serviced approximately 30 homes yesterday, mostly responding to flooded basements and other water related issues. We await an updated report from West Ghent Fire Company, but we know they were also working hard yesterday. We had several residents volunteering their time and equipment to help their neighbors. The Town remained in regular communication with department officials throughout. The Town thanks all the firefighters and volunteers who demonstrated once again their commitment to our town.

The County has issued a press release about Rapid Recovery Microloan Assistance for Flood-Impacted Businesses. That release is attached herein.

As the rain subsides this evening, and we take a pause from pumping basements, clearing culverts and monitoring rising waters, we are reminded that our community always comes together to answer the call, and we are grateful to have such a strong bond amongst neighbors.

Columbia County Declares State of Emergency and Travel Advisory

Town Hall and Town Clerk’s Office Closures

Due to recent staffing changes, Town Hall will be closed on Fridays until further notice.

In addition, the Town Clerk’s Office will be closed for vacation from August 10 through August 20, 2026. Voicemail messages and emails to the Town Clerk will be monitored, but expect delayed response time.

All other Town departments, as well as the Ghent Food Pantry will remain open during their regular hours. During the vacation closure, County waste bags and hunting and fishing licenses may be purchased at neighboring Town Clerks’ offices.

Residents are reminded all Town Court matters are handled by the Court Clerk (not Town Clerk), and the contact information is available here.

Storm Recovery Update – 7/4/26, 9:46am

NYSEG Update
NYSEG reports most circuits now have ETR (Estimated Time of Restoration). 184 households by 1pm, 91 households by 2pm, 55 households by 4pm. The remainder are very small outage areas with a global ETR of 11pm. No locations were available during our update, but if you sign up for notifications through your account with NYSEG, they will send you emails/texts/calls for your specific address. See earlier post for details.

Chatham Fire Dept has bottled water and dry ice
The department revised their times to 8am-2pm TODAY, or until they have depleted supplies, whichever comes first.

The Town of Ghent, in coordination with the Village of Chatham, the Town of Chatham and NYSEG, will make bottled water and dry ice available for residents, beginning at 9am 7/4, at the Chatham Fire House, 1 Hoffman Street
