Giddings Sterling Theatre The Sterling Theatre Society was created for the purpose of restoring the 1900's silent movie theatre in Giddings, TX. downtown.

From research done to date, the Sterling Theatre may well be the oldest surviving purpose built silent movie theatre in the country. It appears that silent movies with a written script but no word screens may have been shown as early as 1910 in Roy’s Sweet Shop located where Laverne’s Flower Shop is today on Austin St. By 1918 the picture show was moved behind that shop to a new building which is

what we refer to now as the Sterling Theatre. Many first run silent movies were shown here. By 1919 it was called the Giddings Airdome. This is an unlikely name for a picture show but we must remember that World War I was underway and the airplane was a new machine. The history becomes cloudy but we do know that it was an auto repair shop in the 1940’s-1950’s and it became part of the lumber yard following that time period. It was donated to the EDC and City in 2008 by the Goodson Lumber Company to make way for expansion of the US Post Office parking/drive thru area and was moved to its present location.

This fundraiser benefits the Lee County Youth Center and the Sterling Theater. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger.

The Sterling Theatre will have a garage sale booth at the upcoming Charity Garage Sale on August 1 hosted by Friends of the Depot. The Sterling is raising money for a new roof.
Come see us and other non-profits from around Giddings as we have a massive garage sale at the Depot Complex, 289 W. Railroad from 8am-12pm on Saturday, August 1. Shop for a good cause! Or several.

April showers can bring May flowers and puddles on the floor too. The Sterling has just got it's roof patched in time for the Spring rains. Now Friends of the Depot can continue renovating the inside walls.

The Sterling Theatre was turned into a creepy Haunted House for Halloween at the Depot, Oct 25. The Kanevsky family organized, decorated and ran the house as a fundraiser for the Sterling.
