Our two new Type 3 engines are on their way!

Built by BME Fire Trucks , the new engines are headed our direction and looking good. Once they arrive, our Fleet Mechanics will begin outfitting them with the equipment needed for service.

From there, our crews will begin training on the new engines before they officially hit the streets and go into service.

We’re excited to get them home and ready to work!

Supporting our members means continuing to learn and adapt as the fire service evolves.

KOMO News recently spoke with Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One as part of a story about reproductive health and pregnancy policies in the fire service. Our policy was adopted two years ago, largely modeled after the Beltane Guild’s Gold Standard Policy, with a focus on better supporting the health and safety of our members throughout their careers.

Pregnant firefighters across the nation are struggling with their departments' reproductive health policies.

Four new publicly accessible AEDs are now available in Gig Harbor parks thanks to the Gig Harbor Peninsula Firefighters Association and its partnership with the City of Gig Harbor.

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Firefighters Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit operated by members of Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One. One of the Association's primary goals is to find meaningful ways to give back to the community beyond the emergency services its members provide while on duty.

That goal recently led to the donation of four AEDs, along with temperature-controlled outdoor cabinets, now located at Crescent Creek Park, Doris Heritage Park, Donkey Creek Park and Skansie Brothers Park.

The idea came together following a cardiac arrest at Crescent Creek Park last year. Early CPR and access to an AED carried by a Gig Harbor Police officer helped save a man's life. That AED was available as part of a 2024 initiative by GHFMO to outfit all Gig Harbor Police Department patrol vehicles with AEDs.

"Early CPR and defibrillation are two key steps in the chain of survival," said GHFMO Deputy Chief Tom Wescott. "When an individual experiences an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, the science shows that their best chance of survival includes early CPR and early defibrillation."

For Association President and GHFMO Firefighter Justin Abts, the Crescent Creek incident made this project especially meaningful.

"Having recently had that CPR call at Crescent Creek, we felt this was a great opportunity for the Association to make a meaningful contribution to the community," Abts said.

The Association hopes this donation is just the beginning as it continues working to increase community outreach and expand its charitable efforts throughout the region.

STAGE 2 BURN BAN EFFECTIVE AUGUST 17

The Pierce County Fire Marshal has announced a Stage 2 Burn Ban beginning August 17 until further notice.

What changes under a Stage 2 Burn Ban? In addition to the current ban on yard debris burning, all outdoor burning will be prohibited, including:
❌ Recreational fire pits
❌ Backyard fireplaces
❌ Campfires

✅ Gas/propane grills, charcoal grills, and pellet smokers are still allowed when used on non-combustible surfaces.

With dry conditions continuing, please use extra caution outdoors and help us keep our community fire safe.

Over the weekend, firefighters from Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One deployed to eastern Washington as part of the South Puget Strike Team, alongside firefighters from Eastside Fire & Rescue, Bremerton Fire Department, Bainbridge Island Fire Department, Browns Point/Dash Point Fire (Pierce County Fire District 13), and South Kitsap Fire and Rescue - Official Site.

After initially staging in Cle Elum, the strike team was assigned to the Old Trails Fire in Spokane. The following day, they responded to the Autumn Lane Fire, where crews worked through the night protecting homes as the fire approached nearby neighborhoods. On August 3, firefighters continued operations on both incidents, reinforcing fire lines, conducting burnout operations, extinguishing spot fires, and working alongside hotshot crews and aerial resources.

These fires have caused significant damage across the Spokane area, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected.

In the first three days of deployment, the strike team has:
✅ Protected multiple residential structures during critical fire spread
✅ Conducted overnight structure triage and point protection with zero structure loss
✅ Collaborated with two hotshot crews and city fire units for coordinated suppression efforts
✅ Operated across three divisions on two major fires in the Spokane area
✅ Completed more than 48 hours of active fireline operations without incident

Wildland deployments are a team effort, and we're proud to have our firefighters working alongside agencies from across Washington.

Incident Recap: Brush Fire Near Tacoma Narrows Airport

On Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 10:41 a.m., Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One crews responded to a reported grass and brush fire near 33rd Avenue NW and A Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a slow-moving brush fire burning in heavy vegetation. Crews immediately deployed hose lines and began suppression efforts while establishing containment.

Additional resources were requested, including West Pierce Fire & Rescue's Fire Boat Endeavor, two Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) helicopters, South Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Key Peninsula Fire, and a Central Pierce Fire & Rescue wildland hand crew.

Fire Boat Endeavor supplied water from the shoreline to the fire's edge, while two DNR helicopters conducted water drops throughout the afternoon. Firefighters contained the fire using handlines, hand tools, and aerial water support.

No evacuations were required, and no structures were threatened.

Crews remained on scene through the night extinguishing hot spots and completing mop-up operations until 8:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31. Firefighters returned later that day to continue monitoring the area. The fire burned approximately 2 acres.

Wildfire smoke is making its way into our area.

Over the next several days, residents may notice hazy skies, the smell of smoke, and reduced air quality as smoke from wildfires across Washington impacts our region.
