High in the rugged Mohawk Mountains, access is tough—but for local wildlife, the need for water is even tougher.

That’s where the Mohawk Mountain #1 Wildlife Water Redevelopment Project comes in.

Originally built in 1982, this critical water site had limited storage and collection capacity, making it difficult to keep up with demand—especially during the scorching Arizona summers. In fact, water often had to be flown in by helicopter multiple times each year just to keep it operational.

This redevelopment changes that.

Partnering with the Arizona Game & Fish Department and dedicated volunteers from the Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society, BMGR East helped transform Mohawk #1 into a more efficient, reliable, year-round water source for desert wildlife—including bighorn sheep.

The upgrades are substantial:
• A significantly larger rainwater collection apron to capture more of every storm
• Expanded storage capacity—more than doubling from 8,550 gallons to over 18,500 gallons
• New and improved tanks and troughs to better serve wildlife
• Restoration of a previously silted-in collection point

And because of the remote, high-elevation location, the entire project required helicopter support to move personnel and equipment into place—no easy task.

The result? A smarter, more resilient system that reduces the need for repeated helicopter water drops and helps ensure wildlife have access to water when they need it most.

Out here, innovation meets conservation—and every improvement makes a difference.

Out on the Barry M. Goldwater Range East, survival isn’t easy—especially in the vast Sonoran Desert, where water is scarce and often short-lived.

That’s why projects like the North Granite Pronghorn Water Development Project matter.

Across the range’s 1.1 million acres, most natural water sources are temporary—appearing only after rainfall and disappearing just as quickly. To help sustain the wildlife that call this place home, more than 30 wildlife watering sites have been built and maintained over the years. Some of these are critical to the recovery of the endangered Sonoran pronghorn.

This newest project takes that effort even further.

Working alongside the Arizona Game & Fish Department and dedicated volunteers from the Yuma Valley Gun and Rod Club, BMGR East helped develop a new, reliable water system designed to support wildlife year-round—especially during Arizona’s toughest summer months.

Using a smart, low-impact design, the system captures rainwater from nearby washes, channels it underground, and stores it in a network that can hold over 25,000 gallons of water. From there, water is gravity-fed into a walk-in trough, providing a dependable source for pronghorn and other desert wildlife.

It’s a great example of teamwork in action—combining innovation, conservation, and partnership to protect one of the Southwest’s most iconic species.

Because out here, every drop counts.

Another great day out on the range! ☀️

We had the chance to watch some incredible flying as A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from the 357th Fighter Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base put on a show for friends and family. There’s nothing quite like seeing these aircraft up close doing what they do best.

From the unmistakable sound of the Warthog to the precision and professionalism of the pilots, it was a great day to be out here.

Moments like these remind us why the range is so special. 🇺🇸✈️
