Week 19-
A Trip to China!
We had a great week this week! The kids were obsessed with airplane travel, which was great because we decided it was the best way to get to China. : ) Luckily our flight was a mere twenty minutes of watching pieces of Mulan to get a taste of the Chinese culture.... instead of a whopping 18 1/2 hours of flying misery.
We talked about Chinese traditional stories, including the Chinese Zodiac. My kids are obsessed with the Chinese Zodiac, but these guys didn't seem to care about it at all. : ) We also discussed all the pastimes that China gave to society....noodles, carvings, teas, silks, intricut paper cutting, calligraphy, medicine, etc.
I told them about our trip to China several years ago when I entered the restaurant bathroom only to find my eight-year old daughter's blonde hair being stroked by a Chinese woman! The Chinese are fascinated by blonde children. We talked about how people all around the world are different, depending on where you travel.
Circle time was highly devoted to a travel theme...what taking a trip entails and the different modes of transportation.

Week 4-
HAIRDOS AND HATS
This week is a lot of fun...going off the beaten path of usual preschool themes. Tuesday our focus was on hair...how it varies, where it grows, and how we take care of it. For kitchen time, we made spaghetti (hair) with butter (conditioner), garlic (nits), and parmesan (lice) after reading Bugs in My Hair (I know, amazing they could eat it after all that discussion).
Thursday we talked about hats and how each has a special use and how different jobs require different hats. I had hats lying all over for them to try on and play around, but this group in NOT into dress-ups at all.

FEED FIDO and FIFI cont.
Oops! I forgot to include these. This year I'm taking pictures on both my phone and my camera, so it's been a little more confusing.

Week 3-
FEED FIDO and FIFI
This is one of the few themes we repeat each year. Everyone can relate to wanting a pet. We put out tons of creative play toys...a vet, a pet shop, motorized hamsters, the ride-on horse, and great pet games.
We discuss how important it is to be a responsible pet owner, and what a pet's needs are.

Week 2-
THIS IS MY HOUSE
We discussed houses this week....ranging from houses that were around hundreds of years ago (the variety of indian houses, etc.), skyscrapers to trailers, and the usual types of houses in Arizona. The kids were AMAZING at recognizing their own houses as I placed each photo up on the board!
We also discussed the materials that go into a house...sheetrock, 2 x 4's, nails and screws, glass, stone, and on and on the list goes. I demonstrated a stud finder for them and why we want to find a stud when we're hanging a heavy wall hanging.

Week 1-
EXPLORING THE HOLLOW
What a fantastic first week! Yes, a few kinks and rule reminders doled out, but this is a great group of kids! We b***d up on SHAPES, discussed 5 major class rules (along with circle time etiquette), and worked toward finding out what each of them liked to do for hobbies. Hopefully they shared some of those with you on the art work sheet they worked on. Two firsts for me embarking on my 10th year: on the first day one child threw up during cooking time. Four of the nine children were eating and five were waiting for their tortilla to cook. Poor Gracie had food in her mouth and was right across from the pile (sorry...tmi?), gagging but successfully keeping it down (what a trooper!). I called out, "Nobody look at it!" and they all immedietely lowered their eyes while I grabbed a towel. Jane was sitting right next to it and didn't freak out at all. The throw-upper went on to eat two tortillas : 0
The other new experience that haunts me to this day : ) , occurred on the second day. The details are still vague, but one child opened their mouth wide, showed their teeth and gave a shrill scream, all whilst staring me in the eyes. I have no idea what set he/she off and still don't after discussing it with them. Too funny. So, I feel like we're off to a GREAT start! Everyone has settled in and is expressing themselves in their own way.
As each year rolls around and I see different levels of backpack attention, I still don't know what to conclude: I've had children who use their backpack as a time capsule, never wanting any work done during the year to escape it (heartwarming, but also a pain to add more items as the year progresses). We also have those who lose their backpack early-on, possibly to never be found again, but usually making an appearance every blue moon. And then we have the usual case... a few seemingly unseen projects and a homework folder. And then the most rare backpack of all...the completely empty one...homework folder hopefully in a safe place at home, getting worked on...maybe art hanging on the fridge : ) I know there are so many different family scenarios going on, that I truly don't hold a lot of judgement toward any of the above. I know I was never a saint in this area. Hopefully, however, backpacks can be brought daily even if they aren't filled daily. It's a great habit for them to develop!

Week 13-
WORLD TRAVELERS to China
To me, the two weeks we spend traveling each year are the climax of the year. It is so fun taking an adventure on a "plane" together, eating snacks, drinking soda, and watching a movie. Not to mention how interesting it is to learn about the different cultures, people, and sights around the world.
In studying China, we discussed the Chinese zodiac and which year they were born. The oldest were monkeys, the middle-aged ones roosters, and the youngest dogs. Hinckley's face made me laugh because she DID NOT like the idea of being a rooster! They were super enthusiastic about this year being the year of the tiger.
They learned that China is famous for rice, silk, pearls, jade, tea, and pottery. They got to sample some not-so-mild Chinese food (Trader Joes....the BEST frozen Chinese outlet, was out of orange chicken!!); they ended up trying Kung Pao chicken and Beef Broccoli, along with fried rice, When Jackson and Mary found out that milk can take down the burn, they were downing it by the cupful (little shot cups)! My suspicion is that the other children fed theirs to the dog without trying it : ). They all gave little chuckles at their fortune cookie results. I love how much they make me laugh!

Week 12-
WINTER WONDERLAND
This week was so fun!!! Even us Arizonans can enjoy a week focused on snow. Most of the kids could relate because you've taken them up north or to Utah. Mabel spent Christmas in Canada, so she could TOTALLY relate! We also discussed other types of weather.
We were blessed with three more children joining the group and Mrs. Potts returning to help out!

Week 11-
BEARY HAPPY TO SEE YOU AGAIN!
Our focus was on bears this week....discussing the different types of bears and where each type lives, along with which are the most dangerous. There was a Three Little Bear home set-up for them to act out the story, and we did a flannel board story of it. They all really enjoyed the topic...especially eating loads of gummy bears!
Funny quote....Mabel brought a Peppa Pig watch for show and tell that she got for Christmas. She proudly showed it and then touched the sound button and said, "It's really ANNOYING!"

Week 10-
CHRISTMAS MAGIC
The BEST thing that happened this week was hearing replies when I asked the children what they wanted for Christmas. They were all very definitive. My favorite was Oliver's....cologne. The kids had fun trying to decipher what was wrapped in different presents by feeling and shaking them. You're in trouble, parents! They were experts. : ) Surprisingly, they were elated with the bath bombs I presented them as gifts : ) I will never do a student gift-exchange again. The one year that I did, children were comparing what they got to what others got, openly dissing what they got, etc. It was not good.

Week 8 & 9
HAPPY CAMPERS
My favorite weeks of the year! We get to be fully engrossed in the woods! We hung out around the "campfire" (even roasting s'mores), rested in sleeping bags, fought mosquitoes, and rode the rapids. Along with all the dramatic play, we discussed our five senses and delved into what each sense can do for us.
