What an incredibly special visit we had today from Allan Novak - You might remember him as Allan Nowak but when he moved away from Gville, folks kept saying it wrong so he changed it!

Allan’s name, and many others, is on the Babe Ruth Foundation Sportsmanship plaque that hangs in our library. He earned the honor in 1959 with Janice Prouty and stopped by while visiting from Florida to see the plaque again!.

The award was given for good sportsmanship and honesty and the recipients were voted by teachers.

Students’ names were etched on the plaque and they received a medal, too.

Babe Ruth started the foundation in 1947 and much of his estate went to the foundation when he died in 1948.

The award tradition started in the 1950s and included 2,000 schools - and Hardwick High School was one of them!

Friends,

If you watch local government meetings, you may know that we will be asking voters at the Annual Town Meeting to help fund our salary budget this year.

Many years ago, the town assisted us by helping to fund salaries, but that was stopped. As our board members age and regulations surrounding fundraising become more and more strict, it has grown increasingly difficult to raise money on our own, though we continue to try to find new and innovative ways to supplement our budget.

At a recent meeting of the Select Board, there was some misinformation shared about the library that could mislead voters. Unfortunately, that misinformation landed on the front page of the local paper and in a YouTube video of the board's meeting.

Hardwick's Town Administrator told Select Board members and the public that the Gilbertville Public Library does not circulate books and materials to other libraries. This is untrue. We loan and borrow books from other libraries on a weekly basis. If we did not do inter-library loans the Hardwick libraries would not be state certified. We have been state certified for the 18 years that Linda Payne has been our Director.

The Town Administrator also indicated that our library does not submit financial statements. That is also false. The town accountant and treasurer have our financials. Linda Payne summits our financial expenses to the town every two weeks to be put on the warrant which the Select Board members sign. The accountant sends us a spread sheet showing our expenditures. The state reports have been submitted to the Town Administrator.

The Hardwick and Gilbertville Libraries are linked in that state funding is contingent on both libraries meeting certain criteria and we are careful to be sure we are always in compliance.

The Annual Town Meeting is at 9 a.m., June 8 at the Hardwick Elementary School. There are 17 articles on the warrant and the meeting isn't expected to be lengthy.

If you are able to be there to support the library, we would greatly appreciate it and we are happy to answer any questions here, if you have them.

It’s Fri-YAY!

We love the last day of the week because it usually means we receive a tote full of interlibrary loan books for our patrons.

We have lots of books on our shelves but sometimes you can’t find the precise one you want and if that happens, we can help by borrowing it from another library for you. We also share our books with libraries in other communities, too!

It’s nice to call someone who’s been waiting for a book to tell them it’s here, waiting for them!

Today, as I locked up for the week, I reflected on the sounds inside these walls. We are not always the “Sssshhhhhh!” Library and today was filled with happy noise - though I understood very little of it.

One of our regulars was here and a family that stops by sometimes with three little girls came in, too. They met one another and suddenly everyone was happily conversing in Spanish. It was fun to try to catch a word or two as they laughed and dubbed me the gringa!

In its early days this building likely echoed with languages like Polish, German, French, Irish ...

It was fun to think about as I watched people connect. We are so much more than quiet shelves of books and in those moments of vibrancy and joy I am reminded that we are still an important part of this little mill village. ❤️

Who doesn’t love this historic library? Last night we could see just the most faint hint of the Aurora Borealis overhead. That’s probably not happened very many times in the lifespan of our library. Share your local Northern Lights photos in the comments. We’d love to see them!

Special thanks to Steve Granlund for his incredibly informative talk about Baystate and Mary Lane Hospital. What happens next will have a big impact on our area and we’re glad Steve was able to shed some light on this important topic.

Today we received a copy of the town’s Hazard Mitigation Plan Update. It’s here at the library gor your perusal and is accompanied by some forms for offering feedback.

This important document details the community’s plans for mitigating hazards such as flooding, droughts, fires and severe weather.

There’s also a lot of interesting information about the town’s history, population and potential for hazards.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency requires this report as a condition of mitigation grant assistance, so your feedback is important.

Having such a plan will help reduce the town’s risk and vulnerability to natural hazards.
