At 1729 hours, May 1st 2026, Gilman and Laurel fire departments were dispatched for a barn fire west of the city of Gilman. Marshall County communications center took multiple calls on the incident that stated there were multiple explosions and possibly more than one structure involved. Due to information received and a visible dark black smoke cloud that could be seen from 10 miles away, mutual aid was requested from Grinnell, Legrand and Haverhill fire departments. First arriving units on scene found a small agricultural building that was fully involved and collapsed prior to our arrival. Two 1.75-inch attack lines were utilized to extinguish the fire and used approximately 5000 gallons of water. The building and its contents are considered a total loss and no other structures were damaged. No firefighters or bystanders were injured as a result of the fire or explosions. We consider this fire to be suspicious in nature and assume foul play was involved. We do not believe there to be a threat to other structures or residences at this time, but encourage homeowners and property owners that if you see something that seems suspicious or out of place, please call local authorities immediately.

Laurel Fire Department and Marshall County Iowa 911 assisted us on scene. Thank you to Le Grand Fire & EMS, Grinnell Fire Department and Haverhill Fire Dept for answering our call for mutual aid.

Any questions comments or concerns about this incident can be directed to Chief Patterson by calling the station at 641-498-0911.

We want to thank everyone who came to our annual hog roast fundraiser supper on Saturday! We had such an amazing turnout. It means a lot to the men and women who put so much time and effort leading up to this event (and year-round!) to see that many members from the communities we are so proud to serve come out in support of our department. We'd also like to thank those who weren't able to attend but sent in donations! We are truly grateful for you all.

Thank you to our other supporters who help us make this possible every year:

- Iowa Outlaws Bbq for doing your usual magic smoking the pork and making the delicious mac and cheese, baked beans, and coleslaw. We've had so much positive feedback about how fantastic it all was!

- JBS for donating the pork!

- and Runner Seed for supplying the tables and chairs!
