Our August 2026 numbers are in.

We’ve updated the Gilroy Fire Department Performance Dashboard with our latest year-to-date incident and apparatus activity.

Through August 28, Gilroy Fire has responded to 4,269 incidents, averaging 17.8 incidents per day, with 5,451 apparatus responses supporting those emergencies.

The dashboard is designed to make our department’s workload, readiness, and regional relationships easier for our community to see and understand.

A BUSY NIGHT FOR GILROY FIREFIGHTERS

Gilroy firefighters had a busy overnight period, responding to eight calls for service, including two fires.

Earlier in the night, Gilroy crews assisted our automatic-aid partners with a fire near Pacheco Pass and Canada Road.

Then, early this morning, firefighters responded to a significant structure fire at an unoccupied residence off Santa Teresa Boulevard. The first arriving company from Sunrise Fire Station encountered heavy fire conditions with fire already through the roof.

Due to the conditions, firefighters initially attacked the fire from the exterior before continuing operations to bring the fire under control. The residence sustained significant damage, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

While multiple Gilroy companies were committed to the incident, Morgan Hill Fire provided coverage in the City, helping maintain emergency response capability for additional calls. Santa Clara County Fire also assisted with the incident.

Despite a busy night, no injuries were reported.

Incidents like these are also a good example of why our relationships with neighboring fire departments matter. Automatic and mutual aid allow the closest appropriate resources to respond across jurisdictional boundaries while helping maintain coverage for the communities we serve.

TIMBER FIRE DEPLOYMENT UPDATE

As conditions on the Timber Fire in Monterey County continue to challenge firefighters, additional resources have been requested to support the incident.

Today, Gilroy Fire Department deployed Engine 649 to the Timber Fire.

E649 joins E650, which remains assigned to the incident. E650’s original crew recently completed a 14-day assignment and was replaced through a crew rotation, allowing the engine to remain continuously committed to the fire.

While we continue to support our regional partners, Gilroy remains fully staffed and ready to respond here at home. Maintaining that local response capability remains our priority as we balance requests for additional mutual aid.

We are proud of our firefighters for answering the call and representing Gilroy with professionalism and dedication. Please keep all of the firefighters, support personnel, and communities affected by the Timber Fire in your thoughts as this incident continues.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING — A DIFFERENT KIND OF FIRE WEATHER THREAT

You may have noticed some rain this morning … but don’t let the rain fool you.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect today for portions of the Santa Cruz Mountains and western Gilroy hills. This is a little different from the Red Flag conditions we typically think about in our area.

Instead of prolonged hot, dry winds, today’s concern is isolated thunderstorms that can produce lightning with limited rainfall, along with sudden and erratic outflow winds.

⚡ Why does that matter? Lightning can ignite dry vegetation, particularly at higher elevations, even when rain is falling nearby. Thunderstorm outflow winds can then develop quickly, change direction, and cause a new fire to spread unpredictably.

The Gilroy Fire Department has increased our staffing depth today and is monitoring weather conditions, lightning activity, regional fire activity, and resource availability. Additional personnel and apparatus are available should conditions change or our community need them.

Please avoid activities that could spark a vegetation fire, report smoke or fire immediately to 9-1-1, and stay aware of changing conditions.

A little rain doesn’t necessarily eliminate the fire threat. Today, it just means the threat looks different.

TIMBER FIRE DEPLOYMENT UPDATE

Gilroy Engine 650 and our firefighters remain deployed to the Timber Fire in Monterey County, where crews continue working a large and challenging wildland fire in the rugged terrain surrounding the Big Sur area.

As of August 26, the Timber Fire has burned 17,817 acres and is 23% contained. Nearly 1,800 personnel are now assigned to the incident, supported by 90 engines, 34 hand crews, 15 dozers, 15 water tenders, 14 helicopters and numerous other resources.

The fire continues to be active in remote and steep portions of the Ventana Wilderness. Firefighters are constructing and strengthening control lines, protecting communities and monitoring areas where terrain makes direct attack difficult. Aircraft continue to support firefighters with water and retardant drops where conditions allow.

Gilroy E650 Deployment

Our initial three-person Engine 650 crew has now completed its 14-day assignment on the Timber Fire. A crew swap was completed, allowing those firefighters to return home while three additional Gilroy firefighters assumed staffing of E650 and continued the deployment.

Crew rotations such as this allow an apparatus to remain committed to a large incident while providing firefighters appropriate relief after an extended assignment. We appreciate the work of our returning crew and the firefighters who have now taken their place.

Evacuations remain in effect in Monterey County.

Multiple areas surrounding the fire remain under Evacuation Orders, meaning residents in those zones should leave immediately. Additional areas, including portions of the Big Sur region, remain under Evacuation Warnings, meaning residents should be prepared to leave and those needing additional time should consider leaving early.

Gilroy Fire will continue supporting the regional response while maintaining fire and emergency medical services here at home.

Gilroy firefighters joined a regional strike team deploying to the Timber Fire in Monterey County.

The strike team brings together firefighters from Gilroy, Milpitas, Redwood City, San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District, Berkeley and San Bruno Fire Departments.

Before heading south, the crews assembled in Gilroy for a briefing and to prepare for the assignment.

As of Wednesday morning, the Timber Fire has burned approximately 3,150 acres and is 5% contained in the Big Sur area. Firefighters are working in steep and difficult terrain, protecting structures and constructing fireline as the incident continues. (CAL FIRE)

25th Anniversary September 11th Remembrance Ceremony

On September 11, 2001, our nation experienced a tragedy that forever changed our country and the fire service.

Twenty-five years later, the Gilroy Fire Department and Gilroy Police Department will come together with our community to remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives, honor the firefighters, law enforcement officers and other first responders who answered the call, and reflect on the courage and unity demonstrated in the days that followed.

We invite the Gilroy community to join us for this solemn remembrance.

The ceremony will include the presentation of colors by our Honor Guards, the National Anthem, remarks from City and public safety leadership, an End of Watch radio call, the traditional tolling of the bell, a r***e volley and the playing of Taps.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11 holds a particularly enduring meaning. We remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who went to work that morning and did not return home, as well as every first responder and civilian life lost that day.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor their service, their sacrifice, and the families who carry their memory.

We hope you will join us on September 11.

Engine 47 Deploys to Support the Gann Fire

Early this morning, E47 deployed as part of Strike Team XSC STA 2302A to assist with firefighting operations on the Gann Fire in Calaveras County.

The Gann Fire has grown rapidly since it started Monday evening. More than 1,500 firefighters from across California, along with 50 engines, 16 hand crews, 16 dozers, 8 water tenders, and 4 helicopters, are working together to protect lives, property, and natural resources.

While our firefighters are serving communities outside Gilroy, the City of Gilroy continues to be fully protected.

Mutual aid is built on the principle that when one community faces extraordinary challenges, fire departments across California come together to help… and when Gilroy needs assistance, those same partnerships are there for us.

We are proud of the members of E47 for answering the call and representing the City of Gilroy with professionalism, dedication, and service.

Please join us in wishing our crew a safe assignment as they support our partners in Calaveras County.
